The Projects presents: Sammy Harkham

Update #4 · Aug 20, 2012 · comment

In 2003 I bought a copy of Kramers Ergot 4, edited by Sammy Harkham, and things would never be the same. I never knew at that time that 9 years later I would have my own comic shop and would be hosting a book release party with Sammy. But it makes me happy knowing that many a customer has likely found something mindblowing at my shop; that the seeds of future inspiration are being planted today. Thank you Sammy, it's a real honor to give you and the Portland comics community an opportunity to meet.

Floating World Comics will host a release party for Everything Together on Friday, October 19th with Sammy Harkham.

Bio from What Things Do:

Sammy Harkham was born in Los Angeles on May 21st 1980. When he was 14 he moved with his family to Sydney Australia. It was while in Australia, he discovered the work of Jamie Hewlett, Dan Clowes, Kim Deitch, Renee French, Chris Ware, Julie Doucet and Jim Woodring. Inspired, Harkham started making his own comics and a zine, Kramers Ergot which has evolved into one of the most highly influential comics anthologies being published today. After high school he went to CalArts, studying experimental animation and filmmaking, but dropped out to focus on comics. His comic strip Poor Sailor, originally published in Kramers Ergot 4, was subsequently included in The Best American Nonrequired Reading of 2004 and has been published in French, Korean, and Italian. Kramers Ergot has been favorably reviewed and placed on numerous best of the year list's including the LA Weekly, Time, The New York Times, Dazed And Confused, The Comics Journal, and Publisher's Weekly. In 2006, after contributing to the third volume of the Drawn & Quarterly Showcase, he started the ongoing solo comic series, Crickets. Two issues of which were published by Drawn & Quarterly. Most recently, he edited The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror #15, published by Bongo Comics. Harkham lives in Los Angeles.

Press release for Everything Together, published this Fall by PictureBox:

Sammy Harkham is regarded as one of the most influential cartoonist/editor of his generation. After a decade of work and groundbreaking anthologies, Everything Together collects his short stories. These comics condense vast amounts of emotion and information into nuanced cartoon narratives. Harkham’s classic style is both articulate and expedient. At the center of the book are two vastly different tales: “Poor Sailor”, a sea-faring myth of a man gone to find wealth for his love; and “Somersaulting”, a fever dream of teenagers in love, wiling away the summer. Around these stories shorter comic strips tackling everything from Napoleon (if he was a tortured artist) to touching examinations of Jewish mysticism and life in a shtetl, to satires of contemporary University life. Through all these works, Harkham maintains a light touch and emotive wit. The works in this book confirm his place among the best storytellers of his generation.
