About this project

A chance to share emotion and vibrancy, to feel part of something greater than oneself and to connect with your community, this is what Flamenco in the Boros is all about. In other words: we’re bringing flamenco to everyone’s door, and for free! …

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is the nation's premier flamenco and Spanish dance companies. We believe that the universal spirit of flamenco, a multicultural art form, has the power to build bridges between cultures and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.

In 2009, the Company launched its program, “Flamenco in the Boros,” to serve the diverse communities across New York City. Since then, the programs have always been entirely free to the public, and have given us a chance to augment our arts education activities in nearby schools and include outreach programs in each local community.

This year’s tour will be entitled “la Feria” in reference to the Feria in Seville starting shortly after. Beside the actual performances, audiences at each venue will be engaged through pre and post-performance discussions, a special Sevillan homage, as well as Spanish and flamenco dance and music workshops.

Flamenco in the Boros also builds on the Company's mission to nurture the next generation of flamenco artists by offering young flamenco artists opportunities to develop their performing skills. Flamenco artists-dancers, musicians, and singers-from the vibrant NYC flamenco community join the long time professionals  and get to hone their skills in these smaller venues.

This year’s tour is greatly depending on your support but previous venues have included: Clemente Soto Velez Center in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Pregones Theater and Casita Maria in the Bronx, Saint Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, and Jamaica Center for Arts in Queens.

 More about the company

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is known for the purity of its work and the unique and original way in which it enriches the art of Flamenco. The Company actively encourages the creativity and innovation of young artists from both Spain and the U.S. while keeping the Company faithful to the powerful traditions of Flamenco.

The Company’s mission of bridging cultures using the spirit of Flamenco is achieved through extensive community outreach, exciting Arts Education programs and powerful performances for diverse audiences. The Company provides intensive curriculum based in-school residency programs, and lively, interactive performances. In conjunction with Lincoln Center Institute, Flamenco Vivo has created two programs for New York City’s teachers and students: Fiesta Flamenca and La Musica Flamenca, which highlight the dance and music of flamenco.

The Company was founded in 1983 by Roberto Lorca and Carlota Santana. The first performances were on May 17 & 18, 1983 at The Alternative Museum in Soho, NYC. Since Mr. Lorca’s untimely death in 1987, the Company has continued to grow and flourish under Ms. Santana’s direction performing at such venues as Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Summerdance Santa Barbara, Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, The Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, Florida, Universidad Bucaramanga in Colombia, South America, Palacio de Congresos in Granada, Spain, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art among many, many others.

Flamenco Vivo offers long-term Residency Programs, Performances, Lecture & Demonstrations, and Workshops. All programs can be customized to meet the needs of each school. The Company is also proud to includeProfessional Development and Teacher Training as part of its educational offerings.
