Four questions with Daniel Abraham
We've been posting Q&A's with out contributors. Here is Daniel Abraham, who will be writing a short story for Issue Three:

Why are stories important, and what compels you to be a storyteller?
In a larger sense, stories are important because they are what creates meaning in your life. The narrative we have about ourselves and our world is what makes us human. For myself, my interest in stories is a lot like watching a fire. Things that can be comforting or dangerous are fascinating.
What are your favorite kinds of stories to read?
Do I get to say well-written ones? Is that a cop-out? I started out reading as an omnivore, and while I've become a lot more selective over time, it hasn't been along the lines of liking one particular kind of story in the sense of mystery over literary over romance, or even fiction over nonfiction. I like stories that transport me. I suppose it's fair to say that I like the ones that don't call attention to the fact that I'm reading words on a page. Metafiction is conceptually interesting, but I find it hard to stay engaged after I've gotten the intellectual point.
Are those the same kind of stories you like to write? If not, what do you like to write?
I wrote metafiction a few times, and I think writing that may be more fun than reading it.
You write under different names, across genres, and in prose and comics. Was it a conscious decision to pursue this kind of variety, or did it just happen? And do you find that the variety cross-pollinates the different work?
I think it was the natural result of working with the brain I have to work with. I'm an enthusiast, and I kind of treasure that about myself. I'm protective of it. I like liking a lot of different things. When I take that into writing, it means that a lot of very different projects sound really cool. With novels, I started off doing a very slow, kind of melancholy epic fantasy series, and then I also did a straight-ahead urban fantasy, and now I'm co-writing an intentionally fun space opera. They're all things I like, and the tricks I pick up in one certainly speak to and give me insight into ways to approach the others. I'd like to write crime novels some day too, and I have a literary parody and also a straight-ahead literary project on my back burner list. I can't imagine why I'd want to narrow the scope of my projects. I don't see what that gets me.
