Update #12: 25th Anniversary of Calvin & Hobbes
25 years ago today, Calvin & Hobbes first graced the comics sections of newspapers across the United States. If that isn't a great excuse to pull out some of your old collections and spend a few minutes being nostalgic, I don't know what is.
Enjoy.

Recently, one of our backers posted the following:
"Every time I think about this project I get goose bumps!
For real,
seriously,
I have financially supported this film because I have always wanted to meet Bill Watterson, and just say, "Thank you so much for your art, and your passion"
And that is the specific goal of the film!
I hope at the end of the day Mr. Watterson actually watches the movie, and by extension he has heard me say what I have longed to say.
For the love of God,
Tim Mitchell"
When I read that post, it touched on exactly why I initially wanted to make this film! I wanted to collect messages and thoughts from Watterson's fans and intersperse them with a deep exploration of his art.
The breadth of this film has grown since that initial eureka (truth-be-told) *shower* moment of wanting to express my own appreciation of Calvin & Hobbes.
As we have progressed with this project, we find that there is much more to explore. We want to ask questions like, "would Calvin & Hobbes have been so successful and beloved if it were introduced today?" and we want to explore Watterson's integrity regarding his refusal to merchandise and license away his characters and artwork.
And, of course, we still want to find out why so many people have connected in a unique and special way with Calvin & Hobbes.
What are your questions about Calvin & Hobbes? What would you want to explore?
And what inspired you to support us?
We want to know.
Thank you for your support. We have 7 days left to go!
Joel
[Below is a photo of some of the Calvin & Hobbes envelopes I've made for some thank you notes. I know, totally sacrilegious. Don't worry. I have multiple copies of the books I pillaged.]

My inspiration to assist is a life long love of the strip. I still remember the very first strip I ever read...I was in 9th grade English class, bored out of mind when a friend of mine (who is sill probably my best friend after almost 25 years) showed me this comic strip he cut from the newspaper. In it, a kid with crazy hair is pounding nails into a coffee table...next strip, Mom is going nuts asking what are you doing...the final, with a drawing that is true to kids showing his confusion at how obtuse his Mom is being, he retorts, "Is this some sort of trick question?" From that moment I was taken in. When I heard about this project of love for the strip, I had to be a part of it.
As for Calvin's success today...my 12 year old nephew (11 at the time) found a copy of my first Calvin & Hobbes book in my parents' basement. He read it and loved it. No indoctrination from me or his own parents, he found this on his own and loved it. For a present earlier this year, I gave to him the giant/complete/huge/HEAVY collection. He absolutely loved it.
I think the nature of children are timeless. Calvin was never restricted to a time because he makes no pop culture references. He has TV, comic books...his Dad has work and his bike...and his Mom has to deal with it all.
Speaking of his Dad...I am a patent attorney. Thank you Mr. Watterson.

calvin has special meaning to me because it was something that my six-year-old son (he's now 26) and i shared together at the end of our busy days. even before he could read, i recall the two of us sprawled across his bed before bedtime as i would read the strips to him each night. one evening he laughed so hard he fell off of the bed! i can still picture him rolling out of sight, giggling the entire time. i even recall the particular line that brought him so low: "don't you hate it when your boogers freeze?"
years later, i became a writing teacher in the pennsylvania public school system and turned once again to calvin as a way to connect to young people. calvin & hobbes, as well as bill watterson's comments on this creative process, proved to be excellent fodder for young writers who could learn how powerful a thoughtfully-chosen single word could be, how to find inspiration from the simplest places, and how to connect to the reader.
so, i'd like to say, "thank you, joel schroeder!" for bringing us "thank you, mr. watterson!"

Yep. I was at the post office the other day and was surprised to see Calvin & Hobbes on a stamp...

I guess I must live under a rock, as I had no idea that was going on.
BTW - is there a timeline - or some place to check on the project status ?
