Tim Powers' novel "Last Call" is a multiple award-winning masterpiece. We will be filming one amazing scene from the novel.

Welcome to the Tim Powers “Last Call” project.

Press release and exclusive interview with Tim Powers can be found here: www.ArcanaPictures.com

First off, for those of you unfamiliar with Powers’ work, let me start off by introducing you to one of the most original Science Fiction / Fantasy authors in the history of the genre.

I don’t say that lightly. I also use the term “history” quite intentionally – Powers is known for his “secret history” approach to story telling: he will take known facts about a chosen topic, find the holes in our knowledge, and fill those in with details that turn ordinary historic events into riveting supernatural thrillers.

Examples include:

On Stranger Tides – which has recently been adapted into the billion-dollar installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series – tackles Pirates, Ponce de Leon, and the search for the Fountain of Youth.

Declare delves into infamous British secret-agent turned traitor Kim Philby and his mysterious antics during World War II.

And then there’s the World Fantasy Award-winning novel Last Call – Powers’ take on Las Vegas. That’s where we come in.

We are raising money to film one scene from Last Call. Upon meeting our funding goal, the scene we will shoot involves Scott Crane (the protagonist) undergoing a bizarre tarot reading with Joshua, a storefront psychic. The scene is a perfect illustration of how Powers turns everyday life into chilling supernatural events.

OK… big picture. Why are we doing this? There are two answers.

First and foremost, we are raising money from other Tim Powers fans because this is a very cool scene and we’d love to sit back and watch it. (And yes, even though I am spearheading this effort, I am still first and foremost a Tim Powers fan.) I want to clarify that the Kickstarter money is for this end goal: a really cool scene for all of us to watch.

But to be completely honest, we will then be taking this individual scene and using it to pitch a larger project. That is, we’ll be showing it to development execs with the goal of turning Last Call into a feature film or TV series. So in addition to being a riveting scene, there may well be an extra bonus down the line. But for now, let’s focus on the Kickstarter scene.

Funding goal: $35,000

This is not a mini camcorder video shoot. We will be putting the money on the screen, producing a high-end finished product. The $35,000 would cover the expenses of filming the scene.

For instance:

Casting

Location scout and rental

Hire quality actors for a 2-day shoot

Crew – director of photography, gaffers, grips, art direction, etc.

Props

Special Effects – both practical (in-scene) and post-production (digital)

Editorial – equipment and editor, color correct

Music and sound design, mixing Etc.

Best of all, because Tim Powers is involved with this production, we have some really fantastic rewards, items you can get only here.

FAQ

  • Short answer: it depends.

Long answer: It's in our long term interest to shoot the most amazing scene we can, to put the money on the screen in the biggest way possible. We picked the scene we did because it's a single location with just two actors, and cool but straightforward special effects.

If we raise more money, we'll consider alternate scenes: larger, more complex scenes with more actors, more effects. It's something we'll look into once we learn what the final tally is. But in the meantime, our goal of $35,000 will allow us to produce a really cool scene, one we're very excited about.

  • We have the option for the novel Last Call. Tim Powers understands how useful a promotional tool this scene can be, and he has not only given us his blessing, he has agreed to help fund the project by offering unique rewards. He'll be signing scripts, drawing sketches just for this project, and will even do a meet-and-greet dinner with some fans. And, schedule permitting, he will be on the set with us during the production.

  • Many Kickstarter projects give themselves 30 days to raise the funds. We're limiting ourselves to 29. Why? Because Tim Powers was born on leap year day... February 29th. And that's just cool.

  • Pledges are just that... promises to pay. No money is taken from your account when you pledge, so if we don't meet our goal, your credit card is never charged. And when we do manage to reach our goal, your credit card still won't be charged until the project officially wraps, which is on October 10th.

  • Sorry this was unclear. Basically, yes.  If you pledge $100, we wouldn't send both DVDs, we'd send the better of the two.  You'd also get the complete pdf ebook, not just the script version. At $250, you'd get the 16x20 print instead of the 8x10, plus the better DVD, plus the complete pdf, etc.  Hope that makes sense!
