The Story

You are about to become obsolete. You think you are special, unique, and that whatever it is that you are doing is impossible to replace. You are wrong. As we speak, millions of algorithms created by computer scientists are frantically running on servers all over the world, with one sole purpose: do whatever you used to do, but better.

That is the argument for a phenomenon called technological unemployment, one that is pervading modern society. But is that really the case? Or is it just a futuristic fantasy? What will become of us in the coming years, and what can we do to prevent a catastrophic collapse of society?

This book will explore the impact that technological advances will have on our lives, how does that affect employment, the nature of work and why we work, what it means to be happy, and provide suggestions on how to avoid a systemic collapse.

Distribution

The book will be released early for backers only. After that the general release on Amazon and iBooks is scheduled.

However, I think this information should be accessible to all, so I decided that some time the general distribution, a free PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 License will also be released on the website.

Why this book?

We are at a turning point in our society, but one of the greatest challenges and dangers that we face is relegated to small academic circles and technically minded people. This is wrong, because this transformation will affect us all. My reason to write this book is to give to the larger public the tools to understand what is coming and not feel impotent when things turn really bad.

Book development

  • Step 0: collect information about the topics and write general outline of the book -- done
  • Step 1: interview with experts in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, economics, anthropology and sociology
  • Step 2: first draft
  • Step 3: proofreading with the help of a professional (this is what the money is for)
  • Step 4: formatting and optimisation for mobi (Kindle), EPUB (iOS and Android) and PDF (PC and Mac)
  • Step 5: early release for backers only (to show some love ^^)
  • Step 6: Design T-Shirts and find a proper manufacturer (only good quality shirts will be chosen)
  • Step 7: print and send limited editions paperback and hardcover for backers, along with t-shirts
  • Step 8: release ebook on Amazon and iBooks
  • Step 9: find publisher for mass physical distribution
  • Step 10: if all goes well and interest is high, conduct a survey and translate the book in the most requested languages
  • Step 11: free PDF under a Creative Commons licence on the website, some time after the general release.
