El Poblano Farm in New York City is bringing you organically grown specialty Mexican herbs and vegetables!
Friends, Mexican Food lovers, Family, and Colleagues, and all,
Welcome to our Kickstarter project to bring organically grown specialty Mexican herbs to markets in New York City!
Have you ever experienced the incredible flavor of epazote? If you have, you know that it's an incredible symbiosis of crisp flavors like mint, cilantro, and garlic all wrapped in one delicious leaf, and its the perfect addition to any green mixture, salad, or Mexican dish. Also, did you know that Papalo is traditionally used in Guacamole instead of cilantro? It's also used in tacos and the traditional mexican sandwich, Cemitas. Skies the limit to the incredible culinary flavors that you can whip up from the traditional Mexican herbs and amazing variety of vegetables available at El Poblano Farm in New York City
The demand for El Poblano Farm's specialty herbs and locally grown produce is on the rise- join us in increasing the production while also growing a sustainable family farm.
Established in 2010 by farmer Gudelio Garcia in Staten Island, the farm is rooted in the cultivation of traditional Mexican herbs that haven't been traditionally grown or marketed in the United States. These are herbs like pipiche, papalo, and epazote, as well as much desired vegetables like arugula, baby squash, swiss chard, beets, onions and more. At El Poblano Farm we have over 60 varieties of vegetables and herbs that are grown to feed visitors to New York City farmers markets and restaurants, and YOU!
Since 2011 Gudelio and the team behind El Poblano Farm have:
-Successfully operated a one acre plot on a 200 year old farm on Staten Island.
-Sold our organically grown produce at Socrates Park in Queens and accepted food stamps for home delivery.
-Expanded operations to a beautiful 10 acre farm, an hour from New York City in Andover, New Jersey!
-Hired an additional staff person in addition to a team of volunteers that plant, harvest, promote and organize produce pick-up for El Poblano Farm.
- Expanded to an additional farmers market in New York City on 125th Street in Manhattan.
-Launched our Kickstarter project to raise our next round of capital for late summer harvest and to create a seed bank.
Contribute to our Kickstarter project and take advantage of the delicious and healthy incentives!
With the money that we raise on Kickstarter we will:
-Finish planting for late summer/fall harvest to bring a greater variety of vegetables to the NYC farmers markets
-Start a seed bank that will allow us to save seeds from this years harvest to plant for next year!
Make sure to check out our video and on behalf of all of us at El Poblano Farm, thank you for supporting our farm.
Gudelio and Team!
About the El Poblano Farm Team:
Gudelio Garcia (pictured in the logo) is the head farmer at El Poblano Farm, appropriately named after his home town Puebla, Mexico where the people are named "poblanos". Gudelio started his farm three years ago on a single acre plot on the oldest running farm in Staten Island, New York. His talented farming skills are helping him diversify his products and gain more popularity at the farmers markets each week.
Michelle Hughes and Christopher Wayne are the Director and Coordinator of the New Farmer Development Project (NFDP), run by Grow NYC. NFDP trains and helps immigrants establish thriving farms in the New York City Region. Gudelio Garcia is a proud member of the NFDP and is grateful to the Grow NYC community for their interest in his products.
Erica Dorn works for Accion, the nation's leading microfinance institution. Through Accion's partnership with the New Farmer Development Project, Erica met Gudelio and grew incredibly interested in seeing his farm grow to become a sustainable venture to support him and his family, as well as provide New York City with the gift of Papalo!
Ken Kinoshita is a licensed architect who received his training at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Ken, originally from Mexico is a huge fan of the products that Gudelio cultivates and agrees that guacamole is significantly better when made with papalo. Ken takes credit for the logo and incentive designs for the El Poblano Farm Kickstarter project.
Lauren Yother's works at Accion in communications and is avid supporter of local farming. After spending time with Gudelio on his farm she wanted to do anything to help the farm grow. Using her talents in video production and social media, Lauren takes credit for the great Kickstarter video and it's subsequent popularity on the Kickstarter platform.
