The end is in sight

Update #18 · May 16, 2013 · comment

The final segment is 70% animated! I am currently in overdrive mode to get it finished by next week. Then I will start building the DVDs and will finally be able to get you your rewards!

Please enjoy this sneak peek of the first clip of the character the Eye of Eyes. I originally hadn't planned to introduce her until Chapter 3, but as I rewrote "The Orange-Green War Continues" to incorporate the backer minifig cameos, I realized I had an opportunity to include her. She is the most painstaking character to animate, but it's worth the effort for the cool effects.

Thanks as always for your patience!

Police Show & Gearing up for the Final Segment

Update #17 · Mar 23, 2013 · 1 comment

In case you missed it when it debuted in January, here is "Police Show Commercial."

Similar to the contests I hosted after the last three segments, I am currently holding an animation contest for people to create there own interpretation of Police Show. I'm looking forward to seeing what people create.

These are the last six backer minifigs who will have their cameos in the final segment, "The Orange-Green War Continues." I have the first week of April off from work and am planning to animate a significant portion of it then. If all goes according to plan the DVDs will (finally) be ready in early June.

Thanks as always for your patience!

From Sports to Police

Update #14 · Jun 19, 2012 · comment

First things first, if you haven't already seen it, check out the 5th segment of Robots!, "The End of Sports":

This was my first time animating with the macro lens that your funds allowed me to buy and I think the effect is stellar. I also decided to try giving the minifigs some additional motion in their shoulder joints by popping the arms out of the sockets and holding them in place with putty. I like the range of motion this allows.

This past weekend was Brickworld Chicago, a giant LEGO fan convention I've attended annually ever since it started 6 years ago. My colleague David Pagano and I hosted a three-hour workshop on the basics of LEGO animation. At the end, I guided some of the kids through animating a short scene from the next installment of Robots!, "Police Show." On Friday, some of them came back to my table and we animated some more.

These tests won't be in the final video, but I thought I'd share them with y'all to give you a sneak peak of what's to come.
