Support green roof workshops in NYC - we'll green a network of roofs and encourage a diverse community to help change the urban environment!
Help support do-it-yourself green roof workshops with schools and non-profits around New York City. The Seeding the City crew will be working with a number of organizations this spring and summer to plant their own green roofs – help us make it happen! We just need $7500 to help make it happen - a bargain in green roof terms!
Seeding the City is a public art project that asks, why have just one roof with 1,000 square feet of green, when you can have 1,000 roofs with 1 square foot of green? (Or in this case, about 4 square feet and a flag!) The project installed small green roof modules and flags on roofs throughout New York city. Each installation was a beginning of a network as every participant was asked to refer us to 2 or 3 more participants, building a green roof network! Beyond being a public art project, Seeding the City also increases awareness about environmental remediation and provides an opportunity for anyone and everyone to participate in making their urban environment a little greener.
Since fall 2009, Seeding the City has installed dozens of small green roofs on New York City rooftops to build a green network. During the installations, many of the host organizations were amazed to find that green roofs were so easy. The project has now evolved and we will be offering do-it-yourself workshops at these organizations and more around New York. We'll host "planting days" where the organization's constituency will spend a day making their own green roof modules (mixing the growing medium, planting the sedum) and laying them out on their roof.
At the end of 2010 we hope to have dozens of 100 - 1,000 square foot units installed on the roofs of various organizations around the city. At each of the organizations we work with -- teen shelters, preschools, environmental organizations and others – we get to educate an audience about the environmental issues that we face as a dense urban area, we will also talk about our ability to contribute positively to creating a more sustainable city. Each hosting organization will be asked to donate 10% of the modules built to be gifted to other neighborhood roofs in order that the original phase of the project can continue!
Goals: Seeding the City is creating a space for people of all ages and situations to play a role in larger urban environmental issues. Green roofs create a healthier environment by reducing energy usage, reducing rainwater runoff, cleaning the air, creating a healthy ecosystem and providing respite from the concrete jungle!
We are seeking $7500 - this will cover additional materials and the cost of labor for project management of all of the workshops and installations.
