About this project

I'm thrilled to announce that my group ZAHA is putting together a five-day tour of the eastern US this spring. We're hitting the road from May 23-27 and we're headed to Charleston, SC and back on I-95. This tour is our first foray out of the greater NYC region, and we're excited to share our music with a wider audience. Your support will help to defray costs for the tour, which include:

- paying for transportation (van rental, gas, insurance)

- paying musicians (performances, food)

- publicity & promotion

We'll be giving shows & workshops at the following fine cities:

05.23 – Washington, DC @ Twins Jazz w/ Diagram 4

05.24 – Richmond, VA @ The Camel w/ Glows in the Dark

05.25 – Durham, NC @ Motorco Music Hall w/ Triangle Soundpainting Orchestra

05.26 – Columbia, SC @ 701 CCA

05.27 – Charleston, SC @ Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, presented by The New Music Collective

Check out our video at the top of this page and get involved by making a pledge and sharing this link.  Thanks for supporting independent music!  ~Evan

What is Soundpainting?

Soundpainting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, and visual artists. Presently the language comprises more than 1000 gestures that are signed by the composer/director (known as the Soundpainter) to indicate the type of response desired of the performers.

The Soundpainter communicates to the group (or individual) through a series of signs using hand and body gestures that indicate specific material to be performed. The Soundpainter develops the performers’ responses, molding and shaping them into the composition, and then signs another series of gestures to continue this process of composing a piece in realtime. With Soundpainting, an entire concert, theater work, dance piece, film score, visual installation, or educational presentation can be created in the moment. I am a performer/composer raised on the prairies of Iowa and rooted in Queens, NY. I create ambient film scores and three-minute pop tunes. I direct ZAHA, my experimental Soundpainting ensemble. I have played with amazing people and bands, such as Carla Bley, Anthony Braxton, Walter Thompson, Robin Eubanks, Danielson, and Welcome Wagon. I lead music at both Resurrection Presbyterian (in Brooklyn) and Sunnyside Reformed Church (in Queens).

ZAHA

ZAHA is a chamber ensemble devoted to realtime composition. Director/composer Evan Mazunik leads the group using Soundpainting, a sign language for live composition. Based in New York City since 2006, ZAHA has performed as part of the New York International Fringe Festival and was featured in a documentary by Jesse Kamras of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Past performances have featured a live film score to Carl Dreyer’s "Vampyr," a guerilla performance in Times Square, and an installation based on human bowling.
