Send $5+ and/or images of windows looking into homes and get a "Art-show worthy" refrigerator magnet of a random window in return!
Hi! My name is Eugenie Tung and I am an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you more about Travel Magnets, my latest art project which will be displayed at the Smack Mellon Gallery from June 18 to July 31 as part of their summer show.
Domesticity has long been a big theme in my work. The Travel Magnets Project spawned from my curiosity about how similar and different are the ways we conduct our lives, by way of looking through windows for clues. To me, windows act like a stage because they make spectators and actors of those on both sides of the glass. The stuff that people place near their windows are visible to the outside world, revealing and projecting pieces of their lives to be speculated on. Moreover, folks pay closer attention to their appearance as they approach their windows, anticipating that they may be seen by those looking up from or across the street.
This project requires your participation. I ask everyone of you to submit photographs of windows from residential homes as seen from the outside. I will turn your submitted images into refrigerator magnets. These magnets will be displayed on used refrigerators, mimicking how travel magnets are meant to be seen at people’s homes.
But the project doesn’t end here… because after the show is over, the refrigerators will be donated to charity, and the magnets will be re-distributed randomly, to those who have contributed to this project via Kickstarter. So see this as spending $5 on a travel magnet not from some exotic location that you may or may not have ever visited, but rather of a place that is so common yet so different. You can put it on your own refrigerator and join me in speculating what other people’s lives are like!
I hope I can convince you to participate in this project by sending me a small donation and images of windows looking from the outside, please read the project FAQs and Updates find out more about this project, or go to my website, www.eugenistudio.com to check out the other projects I have done.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about this project and I look forward to your images!
NOTE: You can still submit images of windows without making any monetary donation, but images submitted by my Kickstarter backers will be given priorities of inclusion.
FAQ
-
A good, focused image in JPEG, The window should be at least 2” x 3” in 200 dpi, or larger.
See http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/eugenie/travel-magnets/posts/73114 for more info.
-
Slight skewing of the window image is fine and operable, but images where the windows are cropped are not useable.
See http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/eugenie/travel-magnets/posts/73114 for more info.
-
Yes
-
To make sure that I don’t by accident send the magnet to the original supplier for the images, please name your file with your Kickstarter user name and, should you decide to send me more than one image, please label them in sequence after your user name. For Example, if the user name is Eugenie Tung, then the images should be labeled as Eugenie Tung, Eugenie Tung2, Eugenie Tung3, etc.
See http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/eugenie/travel-magnets/posts/73114 for more info.

You can send in as many images as you want. All images will be screened, and all selected images will be reformatted for magnet production.
-
This project is about the universal “sameness” and “differences” of homes through looking into windows of residential homes.
-
No.
-
No. Magnets will be sent out randomly.
-
I am essentially the project manager and administrator who had this great idea and wanted to see it done. Plus, I love windows! My tasks include screening and reformatting the images into a magnet friendly scale; overseeing the production of the magnets; coordinating the purchase, delivery, and donation of the refrigerator(s); installing and de-installing the show and, sending out magnets to all of the wonderful backers of this project.
-
One refrigerator can accommodate around 200 magnets. The number of refrigerators and magnets to be featured in the show depends on how much money my backers are willing to put up, and how many images are sent in.
-
Images sent by backers will take priority over non-backers. To ensure this, please name your file(s) with your Kickstarter user name and, should you decide to send me more than one image, label them in sequence after your user name. For Example, if the user name is Eugenie Tung, then the images should be labeled as Eugenie Tung, Eugenie Tung2, Eugenie Tung3, etc.
A maximum of five (5) images from any individual backer will be turned into magnets. There is no guarantee that all images submitted will be used in the final installation. This will allow non-backers and non-award-eligible backers a chance to participate, as well.
-
Yes of course!
-
It takes time and money to turn these images into magnets. I need monetary support to cover the potential cost and labor for formatting the images, making the magnets, and buying a used refrigerator(s) for the exhibition. The quantity of magnets and refrigerators used for the show is determined by how much money I can raise. The more money I raise beyond the goal, the more magnets and refrigerators I can include and display for the show.
-
Magnets will be distributed to the backers based on their award level.
-
They will be donated to charity after the show is over.
-
I hope to launch more projects of this kind in the future and to enlist the support of Kicstarter when a new venue opens up and an opportunity presents itself.
-
The summer show at Smack Mellon ends on July 31. After the show is de-installed I will randomly re-distribute the magnets to my Kickstarter backers. All backers should receive their magnets no later than September 2011.
-
