As you now probably know, the Yale Alumni Magazine’s recent cover story “Why They Call Yale The Gay Ivy” sparked a furor among its readers, igniting a larger controversy about homophobia, tradition and the generational divide in our country today. Out of this vehement and diverse alumni response was born "The Gay Ivy," a musical theater piece featuring the work of more than a dozen writers and composers. The resulting chorus of voices is a collage of different perspectives, interweaving monologue, song, movement and projections: talking to his barber, an alumnus recalls the “good old days;” in a lecture, a professor reveals a secret “Green Carnation Society;” in bed, two female students wake up in each others’ arms; in seminar, a legacy-student confronts his grandfather’s hatred and his own conflicted sexual identity.
We performed a reading of "The Gay Ivy" in October at Shetler Studios, and now New York's fantastic downtown performance laboratory Dixon Place has invited us to present the show in their new theater on Monday, April 5. (We just checked out the space for the first time, and it's awesome!) So, we are raising money to bring the show to life. We will use funds to rent rehearsal space, develop projections/animation and pay our artistic collaborators. Every dollar counts! Not only will your contribution play a crucial role in bringing "The Gay Ivy" to Dixon Place; we also hope to produce a longer run of the show in New York and beyond.
"The Gay Ivy" is a show about Yale, but it’s also about our country, our history, and our culture. By giving voice to disparate perspectives on gayness at Yale, we hope to stimulate broader discussion about equality and love throughout society today. Join us!
