• Who are the brilliant actors bringing Oedipus El Rey to the main-stage?

  We are happy to announce the cast of eSe Teatro's first main-stage production will feature: Erwin Galan, Rose Cano, Carter Rodriguez, Maristela Diaz and Fernando Cavallo. 

  -ERWIN GALAN (Oedipus): Erwin Galan trained in NYC and Seattle and has worked with Russian Director Leonid Anisimov in The Cherry Orchard, Seagull, and Uncle Vanya, in addition to performing in dozens of local plays, including Gregory Award-winning The Adding Machine. His feature film credits include SIFF's Late Autumn; Down for the Count, Break, and Shadowed, which screens at the Tacoma Film Festival on October 9. Erwin also appeared in The Divine Marigolds and is currently filming The Painted Mara. Amazed by the talent and dedication of the production and directing team behind Oedipus El Rey, Erwin is humbled by the commitment and creativity of the artists, who, despite the austerity of their material lives, make impacting works of art.

  -ROSE CANO (Jocasta): Rose Cano, born in Peru, raised in Seattle, is a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts. She performs and directs bilingually in English and Spanish and has presented her shows in Minneapolis, New York, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Peru, and Colombia. Locally she has performed at Seattle Repertory Theater, Seattle Children’s Theater, Intiman Theatre, Book-It Repertory Theatre, and Seattle Group Theatre. She is the founder/director of North-South ConeXions Project, a cultural exchange program between artists of The Americas that has brought over 50 performers to Washington State schools, colleges, universities, reservations and local arts festivals since 1994. In 2001 she founded The AFrican ConeXion Project, to unite Latino, African and African American communities through music, theatre, and dance. As an author, her original bilingual plays and musicals include Self Portrait, Tierra Sin Mal (Lang Without Malice) Mabaire! Don’t Forget Me!, Callejón (The Alley). Directing credits include Electricidad by Luis Alfaro, El Ultimo Coconut by Gerald Alejandro Ford, and Human Borders by Rubi Romero. In 2010 she instigated the creation of eSe Teatro: Seattle Latinos Take Stage, a Latino theatre company made up of local Latino artists. In 2011, she received an Individual Artists Grants from 4Culture for the initial development of this play. She has been a Spanish Medical Interpreter for 17 years and currently works at Harborview Hospital. Her latest endeavor is eSe Teatro, producing bilingual, Spanish and Spanglish-speaking theater with other local Latino artists.

  -MARISTELA DIAZ: Maristela Diaz holds a B.A from the University of Washington in both Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies and received training at Freehold. A multifaceted performer, Stela has performed Carmen Josefina Lopez's theatrical version of Real Women Have Curves with Sky Performing arts, as well as Anna in Sarah Ruhl's The Clean House at Burien Little Theatre. She is also a dancer and has danced with several festivals in Seattle with African Conexion Project and the Peruvian Dance Center. Look for Stela in the short film Cupcakes at the 2012 SIFF.

  -FERNANDO CAVALLO: Fernando Cavallo has been acting since the age of nine when he was casted for church plays due to his personal exuberance. He continued pursuing Community Theater in New York City and landed acting roles as an extra, notably in the Japanese movie The President’s Christmas Tree, directed by Simon Tse. He began to study acting in earnest under Tanya Pettiford-Wates in Seattle before moving on to advanced acting classes at Seattle University as well as extensive improv training. Since then he has performed with Teatro Latino in plays and choral readings (El Cantaro Roto), with The Little Theater off Broadway performing as Romeo in Romeo and Juliette, and with Ericksson Theater as Vatelin for two seasons in An Absolute Turkey. 

  Fernando continues to hone his craft. He has a deep interest in physical-based acting; he trains in martial arts, the Alexander Technique (under Cathernie Kettrick) and is passionate about Jerzy Grotowski’s physical method.

• When will Oedipus El Rey debut in Seattle?

  Opening night is 7:30pm on Friday, December 7 at ACT Theatre, tickets $20. We will be hosting a paid preview on Thursday, December 6 at 7:30pm, tickets $15. In addition, since the goal is to bring our productions to a variety of audiences, there will be a pay-what-you-can preview on Wednesday, December 5. Hope to see you at the show!

• How long with the show run?

  This 'papa' of all tragedies will open Friday, December 7 and play Monday-Saturday evenings at 7:30pm until Saturday, December 15. You are also invited to enjoy the Sunday matinee at 2pm on December 9 & 16.
