Happy 2012! (sketching out the new year)
Last week I expressed my excitement and gratitude to the many backers who brought The Outliers across the Funded line just before Christmas. It’s been another week of amazing support - and with ten of the 30 days left on Kickstarter, and for everyone recovering from New Year celebrations, I thought it might be a good time to post about what's directly ahead (and what's behind) for this project.
There is work to be done, but I couldn't be happier about beginning 2012 with The Outliers up and running. Project backers have given a truly amazing gift – which for me, is not just the ability to self-publish a comic that I'm passionate about, but also the means to produce it the way I want to see it, including: story, art, design, color and type.
One of my favorite aspects of comic books is the hand lettering - I even prefer clumsy, barely-legible hand lettering to something that looks typeset or computer generated. I believe that lettering can reveal as much about a comic story as anything. The Outliers will be entirely hand lettered (save ISBN, if there is one). I am no Chris Ware - but this book will look like somebody made it.
The lettering brings me to a first orders of business! I am resolving the two Outliers incentive prints; the 8”x10” Archival Epson print and the larger, 18”x24” Silkscreen poster. I hope to get them shipped by the end of February (knock on wood) while the more intensive work on the comic is going on. I see the posters, prints and comics as all part of a whole so I’ve been experimenting with a typographical theme to tie them all together. Some variation on this crawl will run across the bottom of the print and set up the signature space for the edition. (Below)
The larger silkscreen print is also in production, with some cool layers and techniques I can discuss in a future post. It will incorporate similar typography and both pieces be limited editions of 150 ideally (unless there is a seismic Kickstarter bump by the 11th)!
I mentioned looking not just ahead, but also behind at this project on the new year. In anticipation of wrapping up the book, I've been digging through old notes and sketches for the final push. (It's not easy, little snippets of ideas find their ways to the corners of other drawings or discarded sketch pads.) Here are some fun process drawings that have contributed so far - including the monster drawings on top referred to as: "yet untitled crypto-project."
Thanks again to all who've supported this endeavor. Have an amazing start to 2012! etj
