Confront your inner minotaur as Glade Dance Collective & artist Jenna Buckingham take you on a mystical journey through the labyrinth.

About "Entwine"

Glade Dance Collective is pairing up with visual artist Jenna Buckingham at a site that inspired us - the Georgetown Waterfront labyrinth.

Jenna’s masks will transform some dancers into Minotaurs, who will roam the labyrinth and inspire fear and wonder into the hearts of unsuspecting Georgetown wanderers and Glade audience members alike.

Meanwhile, the rest of a large group of dancers will choose whether or not to enter the labyrinth to face their personal demons - and the Minotaurs - on a dedicated, meditative journey.

Who will reach the center? Who will get pulled into the temptation of Minotaurs? Which audience members will be inspired to start their own journey?

Collaboration between dance and visual art

Glade is used to collaborating with each other during the choreographic process. For this project, we have loved collaborating with Jenna, too!

Once Jenna agreed to work with us, we all headed to the labyrinth to play and brainstorm. We had a lot of ideas for how dance and art could work together. Live painting on the dancers' bodies? Gathering lots of canvasses and artists to paint reactions in the moment? Creating a backdrop for the outdoor performance?

As we solidified the story we wanted to tell through dance, Jenna came up with the idea for masks, which will highlight the differences between characters and bring another dimension of mysticism to the public, outdoor space.

Inviting other dancers

In order to physically fill the labyrinth, wow the crowd, and "entwine" our wide circle of dance and dance-interested friends, we have invited anyone who is interested and can make two rehearsals to perform with us. (Check out the Facebook invitation if you are interested in joining us!)

We will also be providing extra masks for audience members who, after seeing the performance, are inspired to begin their own meditative journey through the labyrinth.

This performance will also be a part of Dance/MetroDC's Dance is the Answer 2011

The masks

Each Glade dancer volunteers about 12 hours per week to meet, rehearse, choreograph, teach and perform throughout the D.C. area. Jenna has graciously volunteered her focused eye, her creative designs and her skilled hands for this project.

But the masks cannot volunteer themselves! We will be investing in papier-mâché; modge podge; shades of blue, green and red paint; felt extensions; and extra-long pipe cleaners as materials for these 3-D, eye-popping masks.

Please support us as we shake up the Georgetown Waterfront on a beautiful spring day!
