About this project

Blue Kitabu ( www.bluekitabu.org ) is a small 501c3 nonprofit organization that focuses on sustainable educational development around the world. We have found a way to become sustainable ourselves so that we can increase funding for our projects…

Our idea is to open a hip (used) bookstore, café and performance space for local artists here in Boston and have all of the proceeds go to our organization. The bands will get free exposure, you will get cheap fun books and $5 concert nights, we build sustainable schools! Works out very well! We’re hoping to open in early 2010. Contact us with band suggestions (elizabeth@bluekitabu.org).

We are already scoping out spots in Brookline/Allston/Cambridge MA and have a basement full of donated books ready to go!

All the books are gently used and donated (saving them from the trash!) and the stuff at the café will be eco-friendly and vegetarian (organic!). We will also sell hand-crocheted, recycled plastic bag totes (recycling forgotten plastic bags!). For every $1 given, we're expecting it to have a $100+ impact on our educational projects, so if you give $100, it’s like donating $10,000 to us in the long run.

The money will be used to build book shelves, install a speaker system, decorate the place, pay the initial month's rent, market the shop, buy basic machines and furniture for the lounge and cafe space and other misc. costs that come up in these ventures! If you're in Boston please come volunteer your time if you'd like! The more volunteers we have the further the money will go.

Part or all of your pledge is considered tax exempt (a writeoff!) AND you get cool stuff from our organization! Let us know if you want to be on our mailing list for project and event updates - shoot us an email or sign up on our website.
