Funded! And an extra (bikey, beery) challenge.
Wahoo! Taking the Lane 8 is fully funded and then some, and in record (for me) time. Thank you all so much! I'm somewhat caught off guard -- still going through the overwhelmingly many writing submissions and figuring out what to include and how to edit and order it all. This one's going to be a doozy... But back to business for a minute.
I know that part of the reason for this speedy funding is that y'all are excited about the topic. But I suspect that another part of the reason might be the funny reward structure -- a bunch of one-off, limited $25 reward levels that net you a copy of the zine plus something else whimsical, charming, generous, or just plain goofy.
I know I had fun coming up with those, and will have even more fun producing them, and love imagining the results.
A few folks have asked for more like them (and maybe some of you would like the option to skip around and choose something else). So I'm going to add more. But ... drumroll ... not just yet.
My good friend (who is named Ellee and who also lives in Portland and who also publishes bicycle-related books, of course) is also running a Kickstarter on a similar timeline but a much more ambitious scale. She's co-authored a bicycling guide book to Portland's booming craft beer scene -- and she knows what she's doing, being a former Lonely Planet author -- and is releasing thousands of copies into the wild this November. Hopefully. I've gotten some peeks and it's going to be amazing; well worth the effort and care that's going into producing it.
So here's how this is going to work. I'm setting a "stretch goal" but stretching all the way across the Kickstarter page and into her project. When SHE reaches the $7,000 mark, I'll add more fun, heart-warming rewards to MY project. So please spread the word amongst your bike-lovin', beer-tastin' friends who live in Portland or might like to travel here some day.

Lifetime subscription. Includes everything I've published so far (including out-of-print titles). Going forward, whatever I publish, ever, you get a copy. Books, zines, e-books, stickers, cards, cycling caps, t-shirts, records, movies, and whatever else might spring from the creative depths of the Taking the Lane Omnimedia Empire. I've got big ideas, so this could potentially be a great bargain over the years. Or I might quit next month and go into day trading, in which case you'll be out about $320 in value. Sorry. Fine print: Does *not* include other peoples' publications that I distribute; also, when I write a book and someone else publishes it, you'll very likely get one, but there are a few cases where you might not.

Thanks Michael. By the way, y'all, Mr. Andersen's project rewards for his Portland Afoot app (check out the transit/walking/biking/journalism/experimental-small-publishing goodness at portlandafoot.org) are what inspired these ones. Fun stuff.
