The story of painter Elizabeth Rothstein & what should be done with the hundreds of paintings she left behind.

In 1978 my parents chose to name me after a very dear friend of theirs who never had children of her own.  She was an artist and a teacher and she touched my parents’ lives profoundly.   Her paintings spanning the 1920s – 1950s were truly remarkable but she chose to collect them rather than sell them.  A distinguished jury which included Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth once selected her work to be shown in The Met, yet she never pushed her art career as she could have and never reached the renown that she quite possibly should have.   Now, years after her death and with her family line at an end, her hundreds of paintings sit boxed up in a cold storage locker in New Mexico with an uncertain future.

I am endeavoring to accomplish three things with this campaign:

  • To launch a temporary gallery exhibition of the best of Elizabeth Rothstein’s work for all to see
  • To find a lasting home for Elizabeth’s work (a museum would be ideal!)
  • To create a short film documenting the process of getting the paintings out of boxes and into a safe and permanent home

In order to accomplish these things I am meeting with art experts around the country and assessing the possibility of galleries, auctions, collectors, and museums taking her paintings. The work is being received extremely well, but I am also learning what an enormous and uphill battle this will be.  Additionally I am researching her life as best I can and putting together the biography of the woman who gave me her name, but whom I never knew.

Please visit www.ElizabethRothstein.com to have a look at some of her work.

Your support will be absolutely crucial in getting Elizabeth’s story told and her beautiful work seen!   Anything you can give to help launch the gallery show and preserve this work would be thoroughly and wholeheartedly appreciated.

Please help me get this artist’s work the attention and safe-keeping that it deserves!
