Update #6: Camera Adaptor Cables

Posted on February 11

Here are the compatible cameras grouped by adaptor cable with a photo of each cable.  I've tried to be as accurate as possible, but I don't have access to all these cameras to confirm.  If the cable does not appear right for your camera, please let me know.  (The photo corresponds to the description below the photo).

I've sourced all of the cables and have samples of my own (the actual ones in the photos), except the P1 cable, which I've sourced but don't have a sample of yet since it comes from a different source.  So that photo is photoshopped.

This update is now the new document for shutter cable compatibility.  For IR compatibility, please see Update #3.

These are the cable names you will use when responding to the survey I'll send out at the end to find out which cable(s) everyone needs.

Extra cables are $10/each, so if you would like more than one cable, just adjust your pledge accordingly and the survey at the end will sort it all out.  The first cable is of course included.

Note regarding Panasonic: the 2.5mm port is shared with the microphone input on the Panasonic cameras.  The Timelapse+ emulates Panasonic's DMW-RSL1 (http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/DMW-RSL1).  Although Panasonic listed the DMC-ZS7 as compatible on their website, someone pointed out that it is NOT (it doesn't have the 2.5mm port), so please confirm your Panasonic camera does have a 2.5mm port on it somewhere.

Also, I realize it's a non-standard interface.  The following design will be used to overcome this: The jack on the Timelapse+ will have four conductors, and the resistors will be built into the main circuit. Normal cameras use the shield, tip and first ring. The Panasonics use the shield and the second ring. So the resistors will be connected to the second ring and all that will be needed for Panasonic cameras is a straight-through four-conductor 2.5mm-2.5mm cable, which is not very difficult to find. With this design, nothing will even need changing in the Timelapse+ settings for switching between cameras. The Timelapse+ will also be able to sense which cable is connected since the second ring will be shorted to ground on the normal cables (this way it can know to keep the tip and second ring floating when the Panasonics are connected in case there's any current on them from the camera).

Note: Only Canon has been tested so far.  I am confident that there will not be any trouble with the above listed cameras, since they all use the remote shutter interface which is just a simple switch (it's all about just having the right connector).  I'm using an open-source IR library that is said to support the cameras listed below.  I have personally already tested it with Canon.

NOT Supported: Fujifilm X Series, Sony NEX Series (the NEX-5, and NEX-7 have IR-only support), Panasonic DMC-GF2, DMC-ZS7

If your camera is not on this list let me know and I'll find out if it's compatible. The main factor is if it has a connection for a remote shutter release.

Greg, I think there's a different port on the camera for remote shutter -- here's Panasonic's remote: http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/DMW-RSL1

Any idea which cable would be needed for the new Nikon D800 camera? I didn't see it on your list.
