You Down with YPP?
Project by Young Producers Project
WE DID IT! BUT LET'S KEEP GOING! Thanks so much to all who have backed us thus far! We have reached our goal of $1500, but let's not stop there! The full cost of these projects will be greater than what we planned to raise through kickstarter initially, so anything over of $1500 goal will be equally appreciated!
Hugs and smooches,
YPP
WHO WE ARE
The Young Producers Project is a mobile production crew that works with young people to create innovative music, video, and audio journalism projects. The above video shows some of our past work - or go to our website for more more audio and video.
THE PLAN
We're partnering with some fantastic organizations in Chicago and Philadelphia that focus on the media, arts, and environmental justice. This summer and fall we will run workshops with youth journalists in these great cities. We'll create broadcast-ready audio journalism pieces based on youth-led investigative stories about their communities, accompanied by original music composed and performed by the students. At the end we'll have a slew of hot new songs and an audio documentary (an edgy sort of 'This American Life'-style podcast) that the organizations can use for publicity, advocacy, and fundraising. We need your help for the logistics -- travel, fees, equipment -- to make this happen!
OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS
In Chicago we'll work with We the People Media, a journal published by and for the residents of Chicago Public Housing, and People for Community Recovery, a leading Environmental Justice Group based in Altgeld Gardens, that far south side Chicago neighborhood where Barack Obama once cut his teeth as a community organizer. In North Philadephia we'll be working with the Teen Leadership Corps at the Village of Arts and Humanities, who focus on community revitalization through the arts.
THE MAD WAVY STUFF WE'VE DONE
Our youth participants have produced and directed music videos filmed in Bronx neighborhoods, designed sound-art pieces based on James Joyce, made a meditation guide featuring the sounds of water buffalo, and recorded dozens of hip hop tracks. We've worked in NYC public schools, an orphanage in India, with incarcerated youth on Rikers Island, and a group of young professional artists in Harare, Zimbabwe, as part of the Harare International Festival for the Arts. Check out some of our projects.
