"Making Waves" is a feature-length documentary project about the influential yet enigmatic Detroit DJ known only to his fans as The Electrifying Mojo.
Making Waves: The Story of The Electrifying Mojo
My co-producer Robert Beck and I are working on a feature-length documentary about a legendary Detroit disc jockey named The Electrifying Mojo. During high school, both of us spent endless hours driving around the suburbs of Detroit tuned in to his groundbreaking radio show. Mojo ruled the airwaves in the early '80s, when thousands of listeners signed on to be card-carrying members of his "Midnight Funk Association." But Mojo himself was truly a perplexing figure who refused to be interviewed, and would even alter his voice during his broadcasts. In the last decade since going off the air, he has rarely been seen or heard from.
We are initially hoping to speak to both on-air personalities and local musicians about Mojo's influence and legacy in the Detroit area and beyond, as his broadcasts were also extremely popular in Canada and neighboring US states. Money raised in this first round of financing will be used to set up and shoot these interviews, plus some B-roll footage of Detroit landmarks for use throughout the film.
