I'm half way through my next film on one of the great football rivalries in the world - Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal - both teams from Calcutta, India. Like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, both of these teams go deep into Indian history, politics and culture. Mohun Bagan became heroes in 1911 when they beat a British regimental team - and East Bengal eventually represented the identity and social aspirations of people who came to Calcutta from East Pakistan (previously part of India) after the partition of India in 1947 - Both fascinating historical moments.

I'll head back to Calcutta in the Fall to complete the shooting. In Toronto tomorrow through the 7th meeting with 4000 Bengals at a conference trying to drum up support for the film.
