About this project

This 50 minute film will explore Spanish history, culture and regional identity through the intense soccer rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. While other countries and places have sporting rivalries, the Barcelona and Real Madrid match-ups have an historical and political content that is unprecedented.
The finished film will be shown throughout the world at film festivals, on television and through special screenings throughout the United States and Spain. We believe it will stimulate an important discussion about how sports and athletic events have an impact far beyond the stadiums where they are held.
All of the filming has been completed by nine students from California State University Chico, under the direction of Professor and filmmaker Kelly Candaele and Producers Catherine Growdon and Celia Brugman. The filming, research and interviews - all done by students from California State University, Chico - took place in Madrid and Barcelona with the cooperation of both soccer clubs and with help from the Program for Cultural Cooperation at the Spanish Ministry of Culture. The preparation and filming were an intellectual and artistic adventure for everyone involved and we are determined to capture the excitement or our experience in this film. We are now in the process of final editing.
Premier screenings will be held at California State University, Chico and in Los Angeles. It will then be screened in Madrid and Barcelona and offered to television stations in the United States and throughout the world. We also have a distribution plan that includes soccer and fútbol leagues in the United States as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona supporter clubs in several countries. We will also offer online DVD sales through our website.
The money will be used primarily to purchase footage rights to both archival and game footage so we will be able to obtain the widest distribution possible.
