About this project

The Story

"Fire in the Sea" is a film about the struggles and passion of the people directly affected by the invasive lionfish on the eastern coast of the U.S. Tracing the emotional journey of people living near the ocean, "Fire in the Sea" captures the dangers associated with this invasive predator, from the decimation of native tropical fish species around coral reefs to the near death at sea of a fisherman.

The Vision

Our oceans are under assault and the future of our coral reefs is uncertain. Moreover, the ocean ecology off the coast of the eastern U.S., Texas, and the Caribbean is threatened by one insidious and insatiable species, the lionfish (known locally as the firefish for its painful venom). Now, more than ever, we need to help people who don't live near the ocean to understand the interconnectedness of the ocean ecosystem with the world ecosystem and how precarious the balance of life really is.

I was drawn to this story when I heard of the devastation wrought by one species on an entire ecosystem, but I was also drawn by a story of opportunity and renewal. This is a tale about the people who live and fish for their livelihood, and the opportunity they have to turn the invasive lionfish from the hunter to the hunted.

My hope is that "Fire in the Sea" will move audiences to more seriously consider the future of our oceans, coral reefs, and marine life as well as the future of those people whose livelihood is dependent on the health of the sea.

The Funding

Contributions will go to the production of our film and every contribution, big and small, will be greatly appreciated. The money will be used judiciously for equipment rental and travel expenses related to filming.

In the interest of full disclosure, we're going to break down for you exactly what your money will be going towards.
  • Transportation: $650 ($65/day) - Step one is getting to and from recording locations. We'll be visiting people in their home, office, and on their boat to record interviews so we'll be doing a lot of driving to and from locations. This allows us to get to each location with a rental as well as gas. The concept is to film people in their natural environment where they are generally more relaxed.
  • Lodging: $1290 ($129/night) - Once we're there, we'll need a place to stay. It will double as our office and backup studio for interviews.
  • Equipment Rental: $1145 - We'll be renting equipment to include underwater housing equipment and sound recording equipment. We own the cameras, lights, and additional equipment that is required.

What Happens If We Dont Reach Our Funding Goal

How You Can Help

This film is only going to be possible with your participation but don't think that you can't help contribute to this film if you cannot make a monetary contribution. You can also help by spreading the word or sending us your story about how your life is affected by the lionfish. You can even send us video comments via YouTube or Facebook! Be creative and we might add your story to our website or film. We want this to be your film just as much as it is ours. The more people who participate the more chance we have of getting the story out. To help out please Twitter, "Like" us on Facebook (you don't have to like FB!), email this Kickstarter link, and let your friends and co-workers know about the film and this campaign. We would especially love for people to get involved on a local level. Email Edward, the director, by using the Message buttons to get more information and become involved.
