Safehouse is a plot-heavy dramedy about three post-grad roomates who decide to turn their house into a blue haven for co-eds at a nearby Christian university. Each episode will run about 45-47 minutes. The episodes will be digitally shot on either a Canon T2i, Panasonic HVX, or a Canon 7D. The scenes will be shot on location rather than a set. Each season will feature 7 episodes with an estimated 5 seasons to tell the complete story.
The series will follow the roommates as their aspirations and decisons take them to dark places and carry much heavier consequences than ever expected. They will go from harboring drunk college kids to harboring drugs and criminals. The show is essentailly about the evolution of the criminal mind: how little white lies can turn into dark horizons and how one wrong turn can you lead to much “wronger” turns in the future until you realize that you have no idea where you are and by then it’s too late.
Setting: The show will take place in Emerson, CA. Emerson is a simple town on top of a hill.Almost secluded from “civilization”,there are no corporate businesses, no bustling streets, and the trees outnumber the people by far. The town’s economy, government, and complete livelihood relies on the university that the town grew from: Walter Emerson Christian University. Not counting the college kids, the town’s population is mostly consisted of alumni and faculty of WECU. For those reasons exactly, the politics of the town seem to follow WECU’s religious agenda: there are no stores open on Sundays. The town becomes a ghost with the only activity going on located at the university church.
Emerson belongs to Emerson County. The county as a whole is a surreal place. It, as apart of Northern California, differs from it’s Southern counterpart. The county is a patch of luscious green hills covered in grape vines. Upon sight of the area, you start to fall in love and find a sense of paradise. Emerson County is where the rich come to die and the idea of it is not morbid at all. The county’s towns are full of wealthy residents (excluding Emerson which is more middle class since it is made up of teachers and alumni who work at the university) who buy their dream retirement house with a vineyard attached that they may rot away in peace. Emerson County is the closest to paradise that you may get to in your life.
But of course, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Emerson’s vineyards need to be tendended. This responsibility is carried by a large population of illegal migrant workers from Mexico. Their willingness to work for little pay is quickly exploited by the people of Emerson County. In result, we have a lower class that is growing much larger than the ruling upper class.
WECU is another point of interest in Emerson. It is a renowned Christian university which serves as a sort of beacon for Emerson. The school’s prestigious academics and stacked alumni has given it the reputation needed to keep a stable enrollment. The school which once relied on it’s religious foundation to provide students has now expanded to a much more diverse group of students.
This causes a problem between to students and administration. As the students grow and change, many of them long for a modern, common college experience which directly conflicts with the school’s administration. This fuels the school’s growing counterculture and sets the stage for our story.
Oden: Oden is a post-grad from WECU. Since he still owes the school money, he works at a market in Emerson until he can pay off his debt and receive his diploma in Political Science. Oden is a discouraged perfectionist with an amazing amount of potential. He just has to realize it.
Barbie: Barbie is also a post-grad. She works at a hospital in Emerson. She is a spoiled brat who adores being the center of attention and is daddy’s little girl. Her father takes care of everything as long as she remains his “perfect little girl”. Truth is, Barbie hasn’t been close to perfect since high school.
Ahman: Ahman, also a post grad, is a boy genius. Having whizzed through school by spending a majority of it with his head in a book. Achmed is taking some time off to see what world exists beyond Gray’s Anatomy. Ahman is ready to open his mind to the world that he only read about and never experienced.
Three roommates who find an unethical way to make ends meet.
I am shooting this from late January to Early March.
There is a huge party set that I need to fund. I am looking for expenses for props, prop beverages, and set decoration. Also gas money for the small amount of vehicles used in the project.
My school. I go to a christian university and was quite the rebel my freshmen year. I always took pride in the "fact" that my friends and I were the first to create a sort of counter culture for the school. I finally realized how much of an idiot I was for assuming that when I began to hear all these different stories about PUC in the past. There has always been a certain presence of counter culture and I want to make something that captures that presence while being applicable of what we go through today.
I am always available through my email (thanks to Android technology), so if you shoot me a question through my gmail (email@example.com) I will respond asap. If you would like to have a more personal conversation, I would be glad to set up a meeting with you within the limits of my travel or even talk over the phone. Shoot me an email and let's work something out.
I have two big goals for this project. First, I want to use it as an example of my style of filmmaking, writing, and humor. Essentially have it as one of the anchoring projects of my portfolio. Second, I want to enter it in TV festivals. Specifically the ITV festival in New York. After reading a post(http://bit.ly/nL7Vmb) from on of the fest directors, I was inspired to create a long-form web series and would like to see what other people would be interested in investing in something like this. New media is slowly growing in our country and I want to be apart of that movement.
