Egg Design Updates
From @albertchao via Air Quality Egg Google Group :
No glue. No bolts. No screws.
This is the concept for the latest iteration of the Air Quality Egg industrial design. The form is composed of a series of interlocking planes that hold together without additional adhesives or fasteners. Again, this approach is open source. Anyone with flat stock materials will be able to lasercut the templates and build, tweak, or replace their own parts.
The attached images show one of the first prototypes.
Egg_01 shows the silhouette of the Egg profile from the front which simulates an LED light shining through. The image looks blurry, but this is the effect of the frosted plexiglass.
Egg_02 gives a glimpse of the dividers with the outline of the Egg form.
Egg_03 shows the back with the power cord and ethernet plug area for the PCB.
Egg_04 unpacks the box into flat pieces.
There have been some more refinements to the design which will be lasercut later this week. This will include focusing on how to keep the PCB in place. I will also have the vector file up on the wiki soon in case anyone wants to play with the design. Any comments or suggestions would definitely be appreciated. Stay tuned!
Albert
Updates: The Sensemaker team is working and pushing super hard to get these Eggs to you. There have been many exciting developments for the PCB and sensors. There has also been A LOT of discussion on the Google Group. Unfortunately, these do not often result in pretty pictures. However, we are putting together some PCBs and sensors and will have some images and updates soon!

Sensor up a CITY. Let's do a big rally to kick it off. We'll come with 100 Air Quality Eggs, run a clinic, do some talks about sensing/science/community, have an exchange of ideas. Our travel is included to anywhere in US/Europe. 100 people will take home Eggs. Instant critical mass. This is a great way for corporations who want to sponsor this project to get involved, either to give back to the community or engage their own employees in the movement.

So when is this shipping? I thought we were told July? I'm in India... any news? thanks

Wait What? The Air Quality Egg isn't going to be egg shaped? What happened, why is it now a box?
Creator Joe Royall on July 18, 2012
Please keep the egg design as an option

While I'm sure this new packaging is infinitely more make-able, I really loved the imagery of the "egg". Hopefully there will be an egg case design that I can print myself (on a 3D printer).
On the 'plus' side, this new case has the potential nice feature that if you're projecting an egg, you might be able to use the egg's color to indicate something. It would be pretty nifty if the egg image could shift color (assuming it's based on an RGB LED) to indicate whatever it's sensing.

At one time old air-cooled VW engines and chassis were enrobed in very fancy, sporty, bodies. Good looking but still the old "Bug". The "egg" will have value if the electronics are stable and reliable and the system has a long half-life. Then it won't matter if the unit is in an old cereal box. Being accepted and validated in the EPA program is critical regardless of whether it is on display at the Museum of Modern Art.

I think this looks like an amazing start and more practical if it can hold the sensors - etc. Killer.
