'The Garden of Eatin' is run by a group of local chefs who are supplying local and affordable organic crop to the community.
Dan, Melissa, Yarrow and Erika started ‘The Garden of Eatin’ urban farm in Upper South Providence in 2011 to find new ways to grow high quality non-certified organic crops in a limited amount of urban space. We started out with a small test garden of just 10 beds with lumber that we found and repurposed. Our beds ranged in size and depth, allowing us to experiment with what works best in raised beds. We also built a hot box in hopes of being able to start our own seeds. After much difficulty with the hot box, we were eventually able to grow and plant our crop.
To our surprise, our garden flourished and produced more crop than our small group could consume. We began a small CSA program (Community Shared Agriculture) offering produce to our local community at a fraction of grocery store prices. Along with our CSA program, we held a farm stand and found new and creative ways to preserve our crop by making sauces, jellies, candles and soaps all from garden products!
As the 2011 season came to a close we realized that we wanted to do more in the community. We wanted to reach out and offer our CSA program to more community members; we decided to expand from 10 CSA's to 30+. In order to do this though we need a much bigger space. We were able to take over the adjacent garden lot which had been neglected to grow our small garden into an urban farm.
This fall and winter we have worked for countless hours removing over 3000 pounds of toxic lumber, trash and debris that were left behind. Then, with the help of a local saw mill, we acquired clean non toxic lumber. We primed and painted and set to building new beds.
At this time we stand at a cross roads and need your help through kickstarter to raise the funding needed to help us finish the construction of this urban farm. With your donations, we will be able to meet our goals of repairing the existing greenhouse to its original working order, including building a new air tight back wall and replacing many broken windows, building a rain water collection system, and updating our current compost bins to a completely rat proof system. With these things in place, we feel we will be able to successfully be able to grow our CSA program and farm stands to truly make an impact on our community.
We look forward to your support and updating you on how The Garden of Eatin Urban Farm is affecting a larger community in the upcoming season!!
