About this project
Many have asked for it. . . and now it is finally happening! With your help and advance purchases, the Ukrainian Village Band is recording its debut CD!
We recently held a fund raiser that provided a significant portion of the necessary funds to record and manufacture our debut CD; we now seek to raise the remaining funds here with your help and support!
The Ukrainian Village Band formed in 2007 as a group of musicians interested in recreating the village music of Ukraine in the early part of the 20th century--meaning that we are interested in the music of the various ethnic communities of Ukraine. Since our formation, we have also expanded our scope to include an entire repertoire of popular, Ukrainian Zabava band (or Dance Hall) tunes and have played for weddings, birthday parties, New Year's Eve Balls, Malanka (Old Ukrainian New Year), and at several festivals, etc. We also play a monthly gig at Kramarczuk's East European Deli in Minneapolis, ongoing for the past three years.
This is our first recording project!
Our CD will be a sampling from this wide range of music and styles. In particular, we are these days very excited by exploring the vast range of kolomyjka music from Ukraine. Once upon a time a purely folk music form, by the late nineteenth century the kolomyjka had become a popular music form in Ukraine and eastern Poland, with evermore composers penning evermore kolomyjky. It is a musical form that remains widely popular in Ukraine today, with new compositions of kolomyjky appearing constantly--though most often in a more modern, folk-pop style. We have spent a good deal of time playing through and "medleying" together many kolomyjky that were written or collected in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and we will share some of this exploration on the CD.
About us:
Stefan Iwaskewycz (drums), John Luciw (mandolin, vocals), and Natalie Nowytski (bass, vocals) are Ukrainian-Americans from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Oleksiy Khrystych (accordion, vocals) is from Bila Tserkva, a town near to Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. Sydney Lefevre (violin), Jim Parker (kontra), Kim Salisbury (violin), and Jenny Schultz (tsymbaly) are performers of various backgrounds, but we all share in common a passion for folk music . . . and things Ukrainian like pyvo (beer), salo (smoked/salted pork fat), and good horilka (vodka).
Thank you and please support our project!

We have changed the shipping policy and now are offering all contribution rewards with free shipping to both the US and CANADA.
We were unable to edit and change the language under the $35 donation heading, as someone has already donated that amount and it is Kickstarter's policy that a reward box can not be altered once someone has donated that amount. So again, all donations including the $35 will benefit from free shipping in the US and CANADA!

We are a group of musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds. Most of us have performed with the Ethnic Dance Theatre, a professional dance company dedicated to the preservation and presentation of folk music and dance as art. Most of us also grew up performing in the folk ensembles of our respective ethnic communities. Several of us are engaged in other musical and artistic projects. See the sampling of web links below to get a better idea!
