PIECES: A Fusion between Theatre, Spoken Word Poetry and Rap
A heart filled theatrical and hip hop experience expressing life through the eyes of Black, Latina and bi/multi-racial women. Based upon one woman’s journey impacted by the social struggles plaguing inner city America, church life in the African-American tradition and her family’s Hispanic upbringing. Seven women share her stories using their lyrical skills to find healing, hope and voice; uniting in the joys, pains and tensions of their human experience. It is a color filled story painting the picture of what the journey looks and feels like through the eyes of these seven women.
PIECES is a theatrical production which includes a (rap) mixtape and poetical soundtrack. I am the playwright, songwriter and producer for this multi-faceted project. Spending every effort to present my work with the best professional quality, to the best of my ability, I am thankful for my mentors, big sisters, big brothers, play mamas in the industry and academy guiding me through this process and Kickstarter for helping this sista out. Your help is needed to finish the recording and champion the remaining costs of the theatrical performance.
I had my first session at Paramount Studio’s on March 19th with the talented Grammy Award winning sound engineer Randy Urbanski. I have yet to finish 2 rap songs and 12 spoken word poems. This will take at least one more full day at Paramount; each of these sessions cost $1,000. This is where you come in, every dollar counts! Once I complete my recording, it’s ideal to master the project which will cost no less than $75 per song; I have 22 pieces/songs which equals to a minimum of $1650. For the base expenses of recording and mastering we’re looking at $2,650. This figure is not including the remaining music and licensing’s fees which are approximately $700 (I’ve already paid for some).
The counter-part of my project is the actual performance (May 2012). I was able to secure the beautiful and historical El Centro Theatre in the Theatre District for a 2 day run only costing $600!! I need to finish that payment in addition to a $300 insurance policy. We also have other lurking costs such as purchasing music, supplies, props, playbills, posters, giving a small compensation for our cast and crew (Team of 10). And I would love to be able to help our team out with gas funds, L.A. gas prices! Ouch!!! Our lovely cast is committed and traveling a nice distance several days a week for rehearsals.
FYI… My mixtape and all four shows are free of charge!
I’m setting a goal of raising $4,500 to cover the projects’ bare minimum costs. If we have the extra privilege of going over that goal, SWEET! Depending upon how much $ comes in, we may be able to add dates for the show! And more songs to the mixtape!
