Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every week, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields.
A new form of commerce and patronage.
This is not about investment or lending. Project creators keep 100% ownership and control over their work. Instead, they offer products and experiences that are unique to each project.
All or nothing funding.
On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Why? It protects everyone involved. Creators aren’t expected to develop their project without necessary funds, and it allows anyone to test concepts without risk.
Each and every project is the independent creation of someone like you.
Projects are big and small, serious and whimsical, traditional and experimental. They’re inspiring, entertaining and unbelievably diverse. We hope you agree... Welcome to Kickstarter!
Thanks! All done.
Also, have you considered contributing to the official Wikimedia foundation's Wikipedia app?

Is this project aimed at doing something like Wikipanion which allows you to select which articles interest you and save them offline, or like AllOfWiki/Encyclopedia which allow you to store an entire text Wikipedia dump (~5GB) on your device to access anytime. I personally like the latter because a lot of times, I want to look up things that I wouldn't have found interesting beforehand, but it would probably be hard to make free as the bandwidth costs of a five gigabyte app would be insane.
I have a little experience in making web apps, and I wouldn't mind contributing a bit of code (if that's the road you want to take).
@Stephen, that person actually initially released that app for jailbroken phones for free (and published the code too), but later joined the dark side, stopping support (leaving an outdated dump) and also being evil. I've been using his app a while, it's quite useful, but the mid-2008 dump is quite outdated. I took the last version of his code which was released publicly and made some changes to the wikipedia-dump reader to generate smaller and more consistent outputs which can be uploaded via SSH. Though it isn't totally done (i've never tested it completely, I stopped it after getting bored as I wasn't sure I wanted to run a week-long processing task for fixing redirects).
this sounds great.Goes against the spirit of wikipedia! I

Come on, this app would be perfect! Can you at least give us an update? I think its great what your trying to do anyway, someone has created a similar app and it creates a sort of dump of the entire encyclopedia and he is selling it for about 10 dollars or something, not good I think! Goes against the spirit of wikipedia! I think it's great what your trying to do, but give us an update.
I wonder how Dan is getting on in the dog eat dog world of the iPhone app store......
Checking in to see if there have been any progress updates?
I've just started down the trail of learning iPhone development myself so I'm happy to throw a few bucks your way if it will help. Good luck!
Buy yourself a beer or coffee from my 2$ :)
Dan -- in making the app, please feel free to use my set of icons: http://glyphish.com/ (also on kickstarter at http://tr.im/k3n9 )
Hey Ilteris, yeah, I am a huge fan of Instapaper! Feature-wise I guess the recursive article saving thing might differentiate this the most. And the interaction is different -- no need login or browse in MobileSafari or use bookmarklets.
Hey Dan, this sounds great. Also have you checked out Instapaper?
Congrats! I don't have an iPhone yet but I want this app when I get one. :)
Hooray! Thanks all, you guys rock!
Woo hoo. Congratulations Dan.
Right on, congratulations!
Is this the first fully-funded project? Awesome! What happens to the extra $2, lol
man, you just got a big chunk! kudos to the big backer. you're almost there.
dan! this is good for various reasons, including: you're using the money to pay a fee that may be unjustified for free iphone apps, you're making the app open source, and you're furthering the wikipedia cause to make information accessible to everyone (and anywhere).
Dan! This is such a cool idea. Can't wait to see it in action, and get my grubby hands on it!
