A trick for viewing 35mm negatives through an iPhone
Browsing film negatives can be a little tricky. Imagining the lights as darks and darks as lights while peeking through a tiny loupe just isn't a very natural process. So here's a trick my friend Troy Holden showed me how I could use some my phone's advanced settings to make the task much easier.
To set up this process, open Settings>General>Accessibility>Triple-Click Home on your iPhone and select "Invert Colors". Now when you triple tap your home button, your screen turns into a "negative" image. Now all you need to do is open your camera and triple tap the home button to be able to view negatives on your iPhone.
You'll still need your normal equipment, a lightbox and a loupe, but you can just rest your camera on top of the loop as you view. Your camera will still function as normal, so if you want to take any preview images, just take a shot with your iPhone's camera, then use an app like PS Express to make a negative version of your shot.
This trick works great, but if you want, there are a few "less hacky" ways to scan your negatives. HelloPhoto is an app that pretty much does all of this for you.... if you have an iPad, it'll even turn into a lightbox. Lomography will soon be releasing their mobile phone film scanner, which will fit most smart phones.
