About this project

We are a 21st Century Mom and Pop Homestead. Meaning instead of making a modest income from chickens, eggs and vegetables like my Dad, we aim to accomplish the same with our music and our workshop folk instruments.

Since 2007 we have worked towards fullfilling out goal of making the homestead pay for itself, at least to some degree. If you visit our website and visit our "About Us Page" you will find a link to the homestead diary. This is an online history of where we started and where we are now. Thanks to the economy progress has been steady though not fast. We are at a point now that we need investment funds to go to the next level.

Last year I designed and built a "Box Drum", or Cajon. In fact I built two prototypes. One is a 9 panel design and one is a 7 panel design. In my research I have not discovered others of this design. As an old folk musician I have played these quite a bit over the past few months and have been satisfied my design has unique qualities and enjoyable to play. Other local musicians that have tried them feel the same.

Both of these prototypes are of basic primitive construction. No nice finished workmanship. I would like to manufacture and market both these box drums in a quality finished manner that would be competetive with others I have seen presently being marketed. I know my multipanel design well sell very well in the Folk and Latino Music communities..

The number one shop project is to make and sell the first quality AsWeGo Boxdrum.

The majority of any funds received would be used to properly equip the workshop with proper woodworking tools. This includes a planner /joiner, stand router, drill press, band saw, air compressor and a drum sander. The 9 panel prototype I have built is beautiful to play and I have not seen another like it. I would also like to get this design patented. Add in materials such as assorted hardwoods and consumables it would take most of the funds to be able to build a box drum of the same caliber as those I have seen going for a couple hundred bucks each.

I would also like to continue manufacturing the AsWeGo Kazoo models and with the equipment purchased to build box drums add a line of fine wood kazoos to our line of Traditional Carolina Folk Kazoo line. Our joint goal with the box drum project is to manufacture selling stock of 100 kazoos and market these along with box drums are regional folk festivals. The wife and I are both musicians and avid tent campers. With all our gear we are set up perfect for marketing at folk festivals. This would be a great place to introduce both the AsWeGo Box Drum and AsWeGo Kazoo to the folk community.

What if any funds are remaining from setting up the work shop and buying materials it would be used to book commercial space at the Savannah Ga Folk Festival. I would also use this venu to market my original folk songs. The box drums have been recorded on several songs on my new album.

I have sufficient shop space and warehouse space here on the homestead. My workshop is 24'X24' with shelving and workbenchs installed. All basic hand tools are present and powertools such as table saw, hand sanders, hand drills, buffers, mitre saws, ets are also present. The work shop has a 100 amp electrical service sufficient for the tools listed above and much more. The warehouse building is 16'X24' also with 100 amp electrical service. Both buildings are insured and secure.

As a career Navy Chief I learned the value of committment and determination. I have the plan, the time, the place and the skill to make this endeavor a success. Thanks for having a look at my idea. I do appreciate you consideration.

I am known by most people as "Doc Kazoo" or "The Old Kazoo Maker". I was born and raised in the foothills of Western NC where I was fortunate to be surrounded by a rich atmosphere of bluegrass and folk music and musicians as well as a few instrument makers. This is where I made my first wooden kazoo a half century ago. "The Great Aswego Kazoo Factory" isn't a big fancy company. It's the humble studio workshop of this Old Kazoo Maker. "Doc Kazoo"
