We'll have a big update soon, but in the meantime, we wanted you to have a first peek at the nearly finished DISCO space in Woodlawn. The HVAC should be fired up by the end of the day Friday, and the inspectors will be by next week to poke around. It's going to be an amazing place, and we can't wait to start to using it.
Also: the first wave of rewards will go out (for real) in July. Thank you for your patience!
I know it has been a while since we updated you on our progress, but I am happy to report that after a year and a half of working with an architect and the building owner on the plans for the space, securing all the permits and raising the rest of the money for the work, the Desert Island Supply Co. has finally begun renovating its future headquarters in Birmingham's Woodlawn neighborhood.
DISCO has had incredible support from foundations and groups here in Alabama, but you and other Kickstarter backers got us going. We are still an all-volunteer organization. Our volunteers work on lots of little creative projects with kids from across the city, and so I love that our plan to build out space was kickstarted by hundreds of contributors from across the world pitching in what they could. Thank you!
Thank you too for your patience with our handling of the project rewards. Sonja Rossow, an amazing Alabama-based book artist, has made us a huge (16"x12") book of names, to which we will be adding your name shortly. We will also be sending out all digital rewards and the first batch of physical rewards in April. I hope they will be worth the wait.
If you're a Birmingham-based backer or you're just passing through, stop by and check on our progress at 5500 First Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35212.
Desert Island Supply Co.
Because of the generous support of more than 200 backers, we're just $1653 shy of our goal with 24 hours to go.
Thanks to Kickstarter for making the Desert Island Supply Co. its Project of the Day on Tuesday. Most of all, thank you for backing this project and supporting our efforts to give Birmingham-area students more opportunities to write.
