SHIELDS ARE HERE! and a community forum, rgb kits, extra Digisparks, priority shipping, and a design update!

Update #4 · Aug 15, 2012 · 87 comments

Update: Aug 24th - 4 new kits and stackable headers!

You asked for it and we've delivered - in the next hour or so you will receive a kickstarter message with a link to your personal backer page, where you can state which extras you'd like to add to your order and it will calculate the proper pledge amount. Of course, you can change your preferences up until the end of the project - but please keep them updated to help us estimate demand.

NOTE: New backers will get their personal backer link within about an hour of backing.

All extras ship free with any reward level.

A community forum is here - please join and start contributing your project ideas: http://digistump.com/board/

SHIELDS AND KITS ARE HERE!

The following shield PCBs are now available for an addition to your pledge. Use the link that you will receive shortly via kickstarter message to easily calculate your pledge total.

Shield PCBs and Kits!

Shield PCBs: only come with male headers, we'll include enough headers with your order for any ordered shield PCBs

Kits: come with all components needed, including headers.

Thru Hole Proto Shield PCBs (no kits, since they'd be the same!)
Price: $1.25

SMT Proto Shield PCBs (no kits, since they'd be the same!)Price: $1.25

Breakout Header Kits
This board has 6 additional headers each with one i/o pin, ground, and 5v brought out to it. It is available in both GND/5V/Pin and GND/Pin/5V configurations. It is perfboard compatible or you can use female 3-pin header jumpers to plug things into it. This board is about twice the size of the Digispark, but will not block the USB side of it.
Price: $2.50 (includes all headers needed)

Infrared Shield PCBs
This is setup for most 3-Pin IR receivers such as the TSOP382 and requires the receiver, capacitor, and a resistor - extra proto holes are left on the board for other circuitry. Check this out for more info.
Price: $1.25

Infrared Shield Kits
Includes PCB, headers, IR receiver, capacitor, and resistor.
Price: $3.50 each

Grove Shield PCBs These are designed to work with the Grove modules by SeeedStudios - you will need to provide the 2 4-pin JST connectors. It provides one plug for an I2C or Digital module and another for Digital only.
Price: $1.25

Grove Shield Kits:
Includes PCB, headers, and two Grove connectors.
Price: $2.00 each

NOTE: This requires you to solder the surface mount Motor Driver IC.

Motor Driver Shield PCBs - yes we know the board pictured isn't routed - we haven't finalized it yet.

This is designed for the TB6612FNG 1.0A motor driver. UPDATE: It now uses only 4 pins so you can use USB communication when running two motors. It also requires two capacitors. More info.
Price: $1.25

Motor Shield Kits:
Includes PCB, headers, Motor Driver IC, inverters, and capacitors.
Price: $6.25 each

MOSFET Shield PCBs These connect a FQP30N06L to one pin of the Digispark for running DC devices up to 35V. Also requires a protection diode and resistor. More info.Price: $1.25

MOSFET Shield Kits
Includes PCB, headers, MOSFET, diode, and resistor.
Price: $3.50 each

RGB Shield PCBs These are like the RGB kits below, but without the parts, requires 3 resistors and an RGB LED. These PCBs are cheaper than others because they are a bit smaller, so we save a bit.
Price: $1.00

RGB Shield Kits:
Includes PCB, RGB LED, and 3 resistors.
Price: $1.00

Boost Shield PCBs Designed from Adafruit's Minty Boost specs. These are about twice the size of the Digispark and will let you power your Digispark from 2-4.5v.

includes PCB, headers, driver IC, socket, 4 capacitors, diode, and inductor
Price: $9.00 each

I2C LCD Shield Kit - added 8/24
includes 16x2 LCD with I2C modules, cable, shield PCB, right angle connector, headers
This shield will allow you to plug in the LCD and still stack other shields on top (with stackable headers available separately)

Price: $15 (yes these are pricey to source)

LED Charlieplexed Shield Kit - added 8/24
includes 20 red leds, resistors, headers, and PCB - designed by Sparr

Price: $5

LED Charlieplexed Shield PCB

Price: $2.00

Relay Shield Kits - added 8/24includes PCB, headers, transistor, resistor, diode, relay (5A 250VAC, 30VDC), 3.5mm screw terminal

Price: $6

EEPROM Shield Kit - added 8/27

This kit will connect one I2C EEPROM (included) to the Digispark to provide additional memory for data logging, etc.

Price: $4.00

I2C Port Expander Shield- added 8/27

This shield will use two i/o lines to provide 8 more i/o lines using the I2C bus, several of these can be stacked (with stackable headers sold separately) to provide additional i/o. Solder-able/cut-able jumpers allow the I2C address to be changed.

Price: $6.00

RFM12B wireless Shield PCB - added 8/27

Note: This shield is experimental, it is known to work with the Digispark and ATTINY85s but may require some tinkering. For that reason we are only offering it as a PCB. It requires the RFM12B Module (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9582), 3x 10k resistors, 3x 4.7k x resistors, a 10µ capacitor, and a 0.1µ capacitor. It will use 5 pins (leaving 1).

Price: $2.50

Cases! - added 8/27

We're going to do a special run of acrylic laser cut case parts. These will be tab and hole parts that anyone can assemble permanently with just a bit of glue (CA, super glue, epoxy, etc). We don't have any prototypes to show you, because we are waiting for them ourselves, but we likely will be getting them a few days after this project funds - so we are offering them now!

Price: $10 a set

Here is what you'll get: Enough laser cut acrylic case parts for 4+ cases. At minimum these parts will allow you to make: one small Digispark sized case, one Digispark with RGB shield sized case (with cutout for LED), one protoboard/standard sized shield case, and one larger case for use with larger shields such as the charlieplexed LED shield. Likely the parts will be half clear and half exclusive green! So you will be able to make two cases in each color. The image shows some of the case part drawings and the acrylic colors (the shade of green may change, the other is clear).

Stackable Headers - added 8/24

One set of stackable headers (one 3 pin and one 6 pin)
Note: Shield kits, shield PCBs, and Digisparks all come with standard headers.

Price: $1.50 a set

Extra Digisparks

You can add extra Digisparks to your order for $8, this is to add just a few, if you want many more please up your reward level.

Price: $8 each

Priority Mail

US backers can have their order shipped priority by adding $5 to their pledge (otherwise they'll ship first class). All orders over $205 will ship priority regardless.

Design Updates

Check out the latest design revision - about to be sent of to the PCB fab for prototypes:

Breadboard Compatible: The 5V, GND, and VIN pins have been moved so that you can plug the Digispark directly into a breadboard and have the 5V and GND pins plug into the breadboard power bus. To do this you'll need to leave off the VIN header pin.

Cut LED Traces for Lower Power: The LED traces can now be easily cut for lower power consumption, just cut them with an "exacto" type knife in the white box next to the two LEDs.

Removable USB connector: We won't be making the connector perforated, it is impractical from a production standpoint. But you can still shear it off with a paper cutter or score it with a knife and break it off, no important traces cross the connector. We tried it and it worked great! The CE mark will be on the main board, so you'll still have that present.

Shield Ideas:

I'm sure we'll produce more shields once we get everything shipped, but for now we won't be adding any more, we've run out of time to add more to production.

The Wireless inventors shield may be offered  by the manufacturer or by us separate from this kickstarter.

Not going to be made (yet):

  • Transistor shield - very easy to build on a proto shield
  • RFID - ran out of time - will try to make this soon, but we suggest hooking up an I2C RFID chip like this - should be very easy to do:

http://www.robotshop.com/rfid-reader-write-module-i2c-2.html

  • MicroSD, too big, easy to DIY, and we won't have time to test it. We'll be happy to provide a board layout and a link to PCB fab service that will make the boards for about $5 for 3, if people are interested.
  • 7 segment LED, with LED shield and LCD shield we didn't see much demand.
  • Ethernet/Wifi - not enough pins, too big, way too expensive to make, too hard to kit.
  • Patch shield (ala Adafruit patch shield) - not enough room, redundant to the breakout shield
  • Accelerometer, parts too small for home assembly, existing options easy to hook up
  • Jee Port - don't have enough pins/3v
  • Battery clip kit, not enough voltage, would also need a boost shield, can wire one to a boost shield and stick it on with some foam tape.
  • IR emitter - dead simple to wire on a proto shield.
  • CMOS Camera - no enough memory/pins/space/etc
  • Solar power - not much of shield, too small, easy to attach a solar cell/battery combo
  • Maxbotix sonar, very specialized, easy to connect to proto shield or breakout shield.
  • Triac - too similar to mosfet and relay shield, we might do it, but not as part of this kickstarter.

Again, thank you a million to our backers, and please continue to help us get the word out:

Creator Erik Kettenburg on August 28, 2012

@Pushpa - go to your kickstarter inbox (the envelope icon in the top right corner of this page) and look for the message from us with your personal backer link - that will allow you to add extras like cases, then you'll need to come back here and up your pledge to pay for them - the personal backer page will calculate the total for you.

@Adam - sorry it is a package deal because we are ordering them as sets and the LCD is soldered to the I2C module - without the LCD it would only be $3-$4 cheaper, so you're getting an LCD real cheap.

I2C i/o expander has been designed and will be added shortly.

ISP shield: this would be very easy to build on a protoshield - we'll also release board files for shields so anyone can make a shield and have it made cheap by a PCB pool.

I vote for I/O expansion! 3 pins for 8 is a definite no-brainer for a tiny board like this!

    29. Missing_small

Creator Mark Bottomley on August 24, 2012

Hi, I think it would be useful to have some I/O expansion shields. An output shield could be made with a 74LS594 or equivalent the would require 3 pins to give 8 outputs. An input shield could be made with a 74LS165 or equivalent requiring 3 pins to give 8 inputs. Just a thought!

    30. Missing_small

Creator DGerman on August 24, 2012

Can we please not get so carried away with the complexity of shields.
After providing stacking 3 shields on top of a tiny board using a tiny CPU the cost size and whole idea gets bloated.

Creator Erik Kettenburg on August 19, 2012

@Franck - that's a great idea, we'll work one up after we finalize shield designs - realistically a few weeks out, but most certainly we'll shoot for compatibility where it makes the most sense such as IR + motor driver

    48. Missing_small

Creator Franck Bettinger on August 19, 2012

If you manage to decrease the number of pins of the motor shield, and IR distance shield or ultrasound shield could be useful too.

Creator Franck Bettinger on August 19, 2012

What are the different shields compatibility ?
That would be really nice to have a table stating which shield can be used with other shields.
For instance, if you manage to decrease the number of pins of the motor shield, I want to be able to use the IR shield with it (therefore having a IR controlled moving robot). Other combination like RF reader and SD card might be really interesting.
