Nothing needs to be sorted out David. I gave you my trust back then just as I will continue to do so now. My frustration only means I have high expectations and a desire to see this project succeed. I am not about to pull out or desire change on your part because the game is taking a bit longer. I have kept my mouth shut until now because I assumed that some big update was coming and there would be no need to rush you as long as your were working on it. More than anything I was hoping to mess around with the system that has currently been drawn up. As it is I have nothing to really see how it is coming along besides a change in engine to run the game (not discrediting the difficulty of that), unfortately as someone who is not code savvy it doesn't add up to much to talk about or get excited over.

TL:DR I still support this game completely, I am however frustrated with progress and lack of knowledge about code etc. talk to you on Skype if I see you David.

Creator David Hagar on January 17

For those who have offered kind words and encouragement, it's very much appreciated and definitely helps! I did fall behind due to difficulties, but it has never been my intention to deceive anyone or walk off with the funding without anything to show for it. Still, the fact that I caused disappointment/tension is my fault alone. I definitely don't begrudge anyone from being upset.

Shine, if you'd like, I'd be happy to have a one-on-one talk with you to sort things out. I do fully intend to go through with this project even if it breaks my back (metaphorically speaking, at least I hope so!), even if it takes me extra time. If backers can handle the fact that there may be some delays, then instead of being a jerk and clamming up like I did this time, I'll try to return your patience with prudence about keeping everyone up to date. As all of you can probably tell, communication skills are not my strong point. That's just something I have to personally work on and stop making excuses to myself about.

Anyhow, cranking out appreciable amounts of progress on a daily basis has really got things moving along again, and it helps that I'm feeling excited (rather than frustrated) with work each morning. While things fell behind, I guess that's just a part of taking on something as big and daunting as the concept for Cult. In general I couldn't ask for a better response from all of you than the one you've already given, and I'll do my best to make sure you're all repaid with a game that really lives up to a personal vision (even if it can't be cranked out quickly in the way the corporate industry tends to produce things).

@jason huskie: I am real, and I am insanely frustrated at this entire project. Believe me when I say I'm not letting anyone steal money from me and get away with it if there is nothing to show for it. I supported this with the expectation I was investing in a game for a up and coming developer dream. If there isn't anything to show for it, I might as well of bought prime real estate on the moon.

I think most of us would have been fine if he just made the game originally pitched to us and worried about the stretch goal stuff later if at all. It's an epic scope project that has been under construction for a while and the community would just like to see it happen, even if it ends up different than imagined in the beginning.
Most importantly, we are glad you are OK!

Well, it appears my cynicism stands corrected - and I am happy for that, I was looking forward to this one... But regular updates are needed, I'm just sorry it took this to get a response, but I feel the explanation a valid one.

So we are getting tile-sets as NES/SNES level? For a rogue like, especially at this scale that's pretty darned impressive... I take it most of the animal and sentient images will be procedurally generated based on randomised generated seeds? If so, if we like a particular tile image for a animal or race, will there be a way to keep it and insert it into future worlds/ games?

Yes at least 3 of the $500 are real and none of us has heard from him since November either. Things happen in real life and I personally am OK with waiting another 30 days for an update before making any conclusions.

    16. Order_of_eternity.small

Creator Gary Riley, Tormented Grand Cipher of ∞ on January 11

I myself only put in $25, my concern is not with the financial loss, but the damage to future people who wish to use the crowd-source medium to generate the funds required, if he wasn't committing fraud he would have said something like "I'm sorry, it was all too much" or kept us up to date at least monthly... Christ, even EA isn't this bad for updates.

Even now, if he turns up and says "sorry guys..." I can accept it, but its this cut and run method that is causing the real harm. My view is that, having realised he has made enough to live without work for two years or a good deposit for a house he has decided to take the money and run.

A response would go a long way to changing opinion, people will always assume the worst for the most part... Look at the whole PS3 skyrim issue for example.

Maybe a name and shame via media will ger Hagar to respond to us? Give him a week, then report him to sites and other forums, that way he will never be able to screw people over again as his name won't be worth squat... Harsh I know, but he has had AMPLE time to respond to us.

    17. Garbage-day.small

Creator Joseph Grant on January 11

Gary, his profile picture of him being on a "holiday" has been there since the Kickstarter started, several people have pointed out this picture but it doesn't mean anything.

However I agree that this project is probably going down, things aren't looking well. The lack of contact is unacceptable, I've tried appealing to him through his personal e-mail but still have no response.

    18. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator J Aaron Farr on January 11

Well, I'm not terribly surprised. I only kicked in $15, so I don't feel any strong loss if David cannot complete the project.

I've found plenty of indie game developers who underestimate the time and money polishing a game takes. Consider that David was only looking for $5k when he started. For many software developers, that's not even a month's salary. David claimed that was needed for art, music and website. That's still a rather small amount. So you have to be a bit skeptical when a developer underestimates the cost and scope.

That said, I liked the concept and was willing to kick in a nominal amount to help David out. I hope he finds a way to salvage the project or at least, if he is going to abandon it, release the assets publicly under an open source/creative common license.

I have already contacted Kickstarter, and awaiting a response. @Gary, A similar question was posted on the cult boards with regards to the reward tiers biweekly meetings etc, to no response. Very fishy indeed.....

    20. Order_of_eternity.small

Creator Gary Riley, Tormented Grand Cipher of ∞ on January 11

I wonder... Do we have anyone here who pledged $250 and above who have had any biweekly IM's?

That would go a long way to provide potential proof of credibility on Hagar's part...

If not should we be considering or at least looking into contacting kickstarter about this, and looking into the legality of Hagar's actions? And possibly look into criminal charges of fraud.

i know how you feel Wei, this is my first failed investment so far too, though you had a good run with 140...

i have a feeling a few more of mine are the same - but that's why i don't risk much money unless its a credible source that I feel will complete it - like Project Eternity/ Star Citizen, or a group that has already had so much invested that if they get the pledges its very slim they will fail like Z.

i personally think this guy has taken the money, and cut and run - his holiday was no doubt paid for with our money - its sad really, as its people like this that spoil it for all the up and coming hopefuls who are decent and honest and will follow through, and so is a threat to the crowd-source movement as a whole, Shame on you David Hagar!

saying that, if he finally does appear from wherever he is hiding, and provides a valid explanation for disappearing for two months from both the kickstarter page and his own wordpress website and Twitter, and provides us with a working game, then i am happy to apologize for being rash in my estimation of him and his motives - but somehow i don't think that is gonna happen, do any of you?

It's kinda disappointing. I've backed 140 projects to date and I've had a 100% record so far...looks like this might be my first failed investment.

    24. Order_of_eternity.small

Creator Gary Riley, Tormented Grand Cipher of ∞ on January 9

i think he have all been taken for a ride... but guy.. think about it, this is all part of the risk - usually an aspect publishers have to deal with, and its why they rarely allow things to be made that are outside of the moneymaking 'sweet-spot' they definitely will make a profit on, that's why 90% of stuff is sports and COD clone shooters - and why they are in a scramble to buy up the rights to indie titles that prove to be popular.

but even they lose money in some ventures when the company wasn't as good as they claimed, or couldn't get their s**t together, they even hire people to interview and interrogate developers to see if they will come up with the goods (and to see if its economically worth-while).

But with kickstarter, WE are the publisher AND the guy that decides whether to give them money... in this case we seriously dropped the ball - don't worry thing happens, you cant be right every time, we all just have to be a little bit more discerning in the future, and eventually we will get better at spotting those who will be conning us, and those who's eyes are bigger than their talents.

we knew the risks, but in future, if you want to be safe, go for projects where they have already made a name, or you don't mind losing the money. I hope I'm just being a cynic, but I think this one has become a bit of vaporware (if it really existed at all in any kind of real form).

I really don't mind delays if the final product is as great as I hope (some of the projects I've backed are 6+ months behind schedule), but I think at least a short update a month would be quite welcome for your backers. I hope you are managing to work through the snags and not getting too bogged down -- let us know how things are going!

Remember to try to seek help if you really do get stuck. The smaller the team the less people you have to relay on. Luckily there are also a lot of skilled programmes out there that are willing to actually help out as long as you do not relay on them to much. This is a bit of a gamble to me to support a project like this but I would not have done so if I did not think you could make it. So keep on working and remember to focus on the software before you try to please to many with the physical stuff. After all what good is this if the is no game at the end of the development cycle?

    35. Mebeach.small

Creator David Hagar on September 18, 2012

      Hey guys,

Yeah, development hit a snag. I was expecting to have a new engine to work with by this time (a fair bit before, actually) but that just hasn't happened. I'll try to have something out for all of you by/during October (at the very least, I'll be sending out surveys for physical/digital rewards in October). It'll probably be something small, like some additions to the construction system and bugfixes, but I've decided to just go ahead and plow on with development regardless of any rewrites I might have to make later. Seems at this point I can't afford to wait on others any longer.

Thanks for your patience and support, and sorry about the delay!
