Update #5: There are many ways to be an artist
OKAY. I am back!
I had such an amazing time and I have been dreaming of how to convey the scope of my adventures, and the worlds I unearthed inside of my own art practice. I will do my best.
I spent 4 weeks of 8-10 hour days in the studio and outside working in the desert. I would start each day drawing, and then I would move on to collage, closing out the day sculpting. I made drawings of most the road signs on the main drag in Green River. I had to even order more sketchbooks from the art supply in Eugene because neither Amazon nor eBay had them! I made a collage book, a junk tumbleweed, enameled metal prayer flags, a water fountain booby trap, a geodesic dome made out of foam insulation, which I later turned into a cooler, and then into several sculptures with wood and painted panels. I worked hard. I thought a lot about everything. As a take away, I realized that I always want to change things, make things, and then make newer things out of the changed things. It is because I am in love with working! I guess there are many ways to be an artist.
This trip brought a real intensity to my inspiration and drive to my practice up here in Portland. I just finished printing all of the awards and am so excited to send them to you I can’t wait! I know you will like them because I really proud of how they came out (especially the posters).
I want you to know what a big deal this was for me to be able to do this. Having a group of supporters has been a truly profound experience that has left me feeling more comfortable with who I am and the path that I am on. There is more to come.
Thank you so much.
Jamey
Check out my website for a peak at the recent piece I installed at Washington State University Vancouver. Also, new flags and some of the work from Utah!
Update #4: Best week yet//THANK YOU!
I had a really great week despite getting sick and breaking my computer charger. The work for the exhibit is coming together nicely and the I ordered the materials for the dome, which means next week should be EVEN more exciting. I just really appreciate all your support in helping me make this possible. Also, here's a photo of where I've been building most of this stuff, 52 degrees and sunny every day. I sure could get used to this!! Notice the junk tumbleweed in the foreground...

This video below has some good thoughts on pursuing a creative field. It made me laugh!
Update #3: I made it to Green River, UT
So, I am in Green River, where the days are warm and the nights are cold. I have ample time to work and was generously given space and materials on my first day. Epicenter also gave me a desk to work at in the headquarters! I feel so official.
I just wanted to thank all of you again! I will be posting a week's worth of work sometime this weekend on epicenter's blog
Update #2: Average pledge is $99!
I cant tell you how excited I am. Thanks again!
Today is dollar day so send this around to your friends and family! I am curious to see how different backers we can get. I leave in 14 DAYS and just found out that Utah has had 6° weather! Even though I will be working inside for most of the project, I guess I'm going to add long-johns to my packing list.
In other news, I just mailed out my application to USC, the final school I applied for this cycle.
happy mondays

Though I am currently making objects, my work has dealt with transitions of power, utopia, and loss of ideals. From remixing the constitution into an edition of soft-cover books, to hosting a one-sided tug of war match, to a public intervention where I moved a 6000lb bronze of Ken Kesey I make work to highlight actions of change and implement new systems of order.
I am interested in how assemblage has become a method of production that samples the idea of social unrest and revolution. Though prevalent in the art world, the urge recycle and reuse has been co-opted by the mainstream. I complicate this intersection of form and function resulting in work that resembles half-finished sustainable design projects, pipedream relics. I see a world where It is hard to choose your activism. One where doing your part is no longer enough.
My work stands for those who want a revolution so long as there is enough time for a cup of coffee first.
Love my print. I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Green River. I miss it everyday.

Glad you love the poster. STAY TUNED! It seems like Epicenter may have some exciting things in store for 2013, as well.
