About this project

What I have been up to

The past year has been a whirlwind for me as I have completed my BFA in sculpture from the University of Oregon including my terminal exhibition, wrote a thesis, moved to Portland, ran a food booth at the Oregon Country Fair, taught silkscreen printing classes on weekends, became a studio resident at Disjecta IAC, was in three group shows, and recently have been working two jobs to save money for grad school (hopefully USC, ULCA, Columbia, or VCU) or to move to Los Angeles.

The project or opportunity

Epicenter’s "Frontier Fellow" program gives young artists a unique opportunity to work in a distinctly rural setting. I will have access to community, time and space to develop ideas while working on my art. These things are so valuable to young artists. The balance of work and studio work is something I think all artists desire, and many of us could always use more of the latter.

Since community and alternative living are topics in much of my work, this will be the perfect place to extend my practice. Many of Epicenter's community projects involve aspects of affordable housing, and I think being around this kind of sustainable activism will give my work greater depth and a hopefully a few ideas. I am also interested in the desert’s influence on these how communities build and negotiate space. I will be learning how residents of this region have incorporated handed down knowledge of building techniques to integrate themselves into the ecosystem.

UPDATED Project description:

In my last conference call with Epicenter we ironed out the project details. The sculpture will be located outside of Hanksville, a region that looks especially like the landscape of mars.  The installation will include a one man geodesic dome made of reflective styrofoam, a massive concentric circle monument made of scrap building materials, a closed circuit solar water heating system made of black paint, glass, wood and a garden hose, and a collection of found objects that are marble paint dipped. Altogether this site specific work will serve as the remnants of future setters of earth or inhabitants of a distant planet.

What else?

I hope to find the pyramidal tailings of uranium mine located just south of Green River. I spoke with my grandfather who said he worked on a project in Green River that had to do with a mine of sorts and though he wasn’t able to tell me, I suspect this may be what he was working on.

I will also finally be able to take a trip to Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, and Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels, and also will hopefully get to check out the residence program at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, UT.

Connected as Jamey Herman (552 friends)

Though I am currently making objects, my work has dealt with transitions of power, utopia, and loss of ideals. From remixing the constitution into an edition of soft-cover books, to hosting a one-sided tug of war match, to a public intervention where I moved a 6000lb bronze of Ken Kesey I make work to highlight actions of change and implement new systems of order.

I am interested in how assemblage has become a method of production that samples the idea of social unrest and revolution. Though prevalent in the art world, the urge recycle and reuse has been co-opted by the mainstream. I complicate this intersection of form and function resulting in work that resembles half-finished sustainable design projects, pipedream relics. I see a world where It is hard to choose your activism. One where doing your part is no longer enough.

My work stands for those who want a revolution so long as there is enough time for a cup of coffee first.
