Update #5: What do you want to know?
Update #4: Thank you all for helping us reach our goal!
Hello backers!
First, BP got a cap on the well and it seems to be holding. It's the best spill related news since it happened. Hopefully containment will continue.
Second, thank you all so much for your support. After a big push at the end, we reached our goal. It's amazing. Some hometown press in Nevada City, in The Union newspaper and on KVMR radio really helped. Thanks to Jesse Locks, Michelle Rindels, Roger Hicks and Paul Emery for helping make those happen.
It's really encouraging and inspiring to receive contributions from you all. I take the support seriously and can guarantee hard work toward a long form documentary. Hopefully this Kickstarter campaign will turn out to be the beginning of a snowball that grows into more funding from other sources and a fantastic feature film.
Anyhow, Scott and I are currently planning a return trip that will take place in about a week. We think we will check out some areas in Florida that haven't yet been hit with oil, and hopefully won't. I want to show what the Gulf looks like in its undamaged state. After some time in Florida, we will work our way westward toward Louisiana, where we will reconnect with some subjects there and continue working on attaining more access restricted areas around the site. Also, we want to talk to folks about how they feel, now that the oil has finally stopped spewing.
This week in New York we are lining up a couple interviews with geological and oil experts.
We are also spending a lot of time working on the structure of a longer format piece. The documentary is a mutable form, but of course it's good to have a structure in mind along the way.
Anyhow, I'll continue to keep you all updated. Thank you so much and I look forward to sharing more!
best,
jesse
Update #3: The Gulf Celebrates America's Birthday!
Update #2: The second voyage...
Hey everyone.
I've recently returned from a second voyage to the Gulf. It was challenging and eye opening and fun.
A short doc is on the way, and will be up in a couple days. But I wanted to post this video update first.
Just five days of fundraising left, but I think with a big push we can do it.

Connected as Jesse Ryan Hicks
Jesse Hicks grew up in Nevada City, a small town in the foothills of Northern California. He attended Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley and graduated from Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, California. He maintains close friendships with peers from both high schools. Then it was off to New York, where he graduated from Columbia College. Now Jesse lives in Brooklyn. He has directed, produced, shot, and edited a wide range of films and videos. These include numerous short films for clients like the Independent Film Channel, narratives, documentaries, and live music shoots.
He likes swimming in rivers and oceans and other bodies of water, especially when they don't have high levels of petroleum and petroleum dispersants in them.

Wonderful news Jesse and Scott. Wish I could take that trip with you guys. I admire your spirit and desire to bring something positive to all of us.
Good luck and safe traveling.
