Before I Die... (Pittsburgh) is an interactive public art project that will inspire positive personal development and civic engagement.
The 'Before I Die' Project is an interactive public art project created by artist Candy Chang. It encourages and inspires community residents and visitors alike to share their stories and dreams in a public forum. Through this project we can be reminded of how valuable we are not only as individuals, but as united communities.
Dee: Before I die, I want my own business.
Developing this project for Pittsburgh and a number of its urban communities, we will transform the sides of abandoned buildings or small business into interactive chalkboards listed only with the prompt "Before I die, I want to __________". By installing this interactive art project in Pittsburgh neighborhoods, we hope to inspire positive personal change not only within participating individuals, but in the community as a whole.
Rob: Before I die, I want to travel the world!
Led by life-long residents D'Onna and Rob, we hope to build 'Before I Die' sites in several of Pittsburgh's developed and underdeveloped neighborhoods. Beginning in the Lawrenceville area and then expanding to other neighborhoods such as Garfield/East Liberty, Braddock, and Polish Hill, each project will remain in the community for only one month before moving to the next site.

The phrase 'Before I Die, may elicit apprehension at first glance, but it has been shown through prototypes of this project around the world, that the simple act of declaring how someone will live out the rest of their days on earth has the uncanny ability to elicit a sense of purpose in the lives of project participants. It is our hope that this public art project not only garners participation, but moreover that it sparks a sense of civic and cultural pride in the landscape of Pittsburgh as a whole.
This Kickstarter will assist us in completing our project by providing funds for chalkboard materials and supplies such as plywood, paint, and chalk. The funding will cover costs to put boards in four other neighborhoods. In addition to cost of supplies your funds will be used to produce a short documentary and website that will record our progress during this project and beyond.

Nope!
Rob and Dee are just a bundle of friends who wanted to do this project in neighborhoods that have either recently flourished, or are underdeveloped. They only found out about the ACAC wall 24 hours before launching this Kickstarter. Despite not being the first to place this project in Pittsburgh, they are still determined to bring it to as many neighborhoods as possible.
