Dawson Vosburg, a young author, is publishing a fantasy novel and tying in a school Geography and English curriculum with it.

Our Story

I'm Dawson Vosburg. I'm a young author, artist, filmmaker, and calligrapher. I like making cool things.

I've written a fantasy novel called Incognito about a young boy who becomes an apprentice at a mapmaking shop and goes on all sorts of adventures, and it has shown itself to be my strongest piece of writing yet. So I've decided to publish it. I've been working on this book for well over a year now and I want to see it come to fruition.

The Impact

This book would also tie into a curriculum for middle and high school Geography and English classes in which you would make maps of a fictitious island and write a story about what happens there. I want this to be something where students can open up their imaginations and relax, not having to worry about the normal stresses that come with school assignments but instead feeling freed from it.

My book, Incognito, was in part inspired by a similar project in Geography where we created a fantasy island and made maps of it. I want to pass this on to as many kids as I can to make a difference in their creativity.

What We Need & What You Get

I'm planning on having events at libraries, especially summer reading programs to promote the books and also teach about calligraphy, maps, and writing (all of which are tied into the book). This means a cost for a printing of the books as well as some travel costs.

The book itself will cost money with printing, illustrator/cover artist, editor, and other such things. In the past...I haven't been able to pay these people what they're due, and I mean to correct that this time.

$1000 is a good starting amount, taking into consideration all of these costs (as well as the backer perks).

Speaking of which--for most of the backer perks (all of them above the $5 level) I'm going to give away a map of the island that the book takes place on--at the $15 and $30 you get a normal letter-sized map and at $50+ you get a larger one. It will be either hand-drawn or a copy of a hand drawn one, depending on how many backers I get. Most pledge tiers will also get a free book before it comes out, or at least the opportunity to get the book before it comes out.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't back with your wallet, post the link on your Facebook, Twitter, or share with your friends. You can also help by talking to your local library about contacting me to visit (my email is dawson at vosburgs dot org) and referring them to this project.

Thank you!
