About this project
There’s no telling where or when you’ll see a camera on a string. They just sort of pop up, surprise people, and disappear as quickly as they come. So mysterious….
"camera on a string" is just what it sounds like. It is a disposable camera tied to something - like a bench or a fence or a telephone pole - with a paper inviting people to take a picture. The cameras are (hopefully) collected at the end of the day and all of the magic they contain are shared with the world on the website.
They show that people like to take pictures of themselves, their friends, and innocent passers-by. They take pictures of the people and animals they love. The cameras reveal that people like to dance and smile. They like to be silly and be naughty. And people like when something unexpected pops up in their daily life.
This is installation, intervention, social experiment, exploration of places and the people who occupy them, and all fun!
Funds from the Kickstarter campaign will be used to put more cameras on strings out in the world. Specifically, enough that the site can be updated with at least one new camera each week for a year. Just some of the cities that will be hit in the coming year include San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Montreal, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and... yours?
What happens if you help us pass the funding goal? More funding means more cameras in more places!
So now let's talk rewards. ALL backers get special access to some of the photos that aren't on the website - not just ones that have already been done, but for the coming year if funding is successful! Give $15 or more and you get a print of one of the photos from camera on a string. The more you give, the more options you have for the photos you receive!
And if you're REALLY feeling generous, not only do you get a photo package, you also get to name a city of your choice where a camera on a string will be located!
Take a look at http://cameraonastring.com to see some of what's happened already.
