About this project

I am in the final phase of setting up my own independent ceramic studio. I have been developing my product lines for 2 years and took the leap of faith and "quit my day job" in January. I have a brand new studio space and everything I need to get started, but lack 2 pretty essential pieces of equipment to make things operate smoothly.

AIR - refers to a vent for my kiln. I already have the biggy...the kiln, but it needs to be vented so that I can work in the studio when it is on. I fire to about 2000 degrees and that can make a 350 sq. ft space a bit toasty and not so healthy when the chemicals are burning out of the clay. The vent pulls both the heat and gasses outside, similar to your stove exhaust.

ROLLERS - refers to a piece of equipment called a "Slab Roller". Think old fashioned wringer washer on steroids. My primary working method is using slabs of clay to make tiles, boxes, plates and lots of other interesting goodies. A slab roller is an essential tool to create slabs of clay that are of uniform thickness.

With the your help I hope to purchase these two pieces of equipment to make my studio operate smoother and increase my production turn around time.

I cannot remember a time that I have not done some form of handwork. My formal introduction was in Brownie Girl Scouts with counted Cross-stitch. I am descended from a long line of multi-talented needlewomen and remember many hours of making little “pillows” out of scraps while staying with my grandmother.

I began my creative career in beadwork. After many years of recreating cross stitch patterns I was introduced to beadwork. At the time I did not have a bead store nearby or anyone to teach me. I learned that I didn't have to "follow a pattern". I could make it up as I went along. This quickly led to designing my own patterns, publishing a beadwork pattern book and then owning a bead store.

In 2004 I closed my shop and moved to Asheville, NC where I ended up working in an administrative capacity for a ceramic art center. My sweetie is a clay artist and you can't be around the stuff for long without getting your hands in the mud. I spent 4 years "working a day job", absorbing as much about clay as I could, and working frantically in my off hours to begin a new career.

I made the leap in January to become a full time artist/entrepreneur again and feel like I have come home to where I belong...Playing in the mud puddles!
