About this project
In 2005 I returned to New Jersey, where I was born, for graduate school in physics. My father said, "it's like the turtles going back to the shore to mate." I've settled in and found that Jersey has great places for play, in addition to work. The three pastel paintings available through this fundraiser are snapshots I've taken as I've begun rediscovering my home state.
The Election
I'd like to release one of these paintings to the public domain as a souvenir for everyone to share. Your help decides which one. Each fine art print you order from the "rewards" list is a vote. If we raise $105 in pledges by December 11, I will distribute the fine art prints and release the painting that sells the most prints to the public domain. Additionally, if we raise $300, I'll put the winning painting up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of $25 shipped.
Vote, and campaign for your favorite "candidate" :)! I'm happy to read your emailed questions and comments. Please join the conversation on http://www.facebook.com/908illustrate
The Candidates
Dusk over Highlands: The original painting is an oil pastel of a saturated dusk fading into evening along the Jersey Shore. Highlands, NJ near Sandy Hook. Sakura cray-pas on 12x18" Borden and Riley #410 textured paper. (C) 2009 David Liao.
Orchard in Lawrenceville: Jersey summers can bring long and bright days, but the dryer air of autumn brings a deeper blue to the sky that presses and sparkles against the season's saturated foliage. Part of the fun of apple picking is the view of the orchard itself. Sakura cray-pas 12.5x15" image on Canson Mi-Teintes brown paper. (C) 2009 David Liao.
Window at Manasquan: The beaches of Manasquan have a different feel from boardwalk communities like Asbury Park to the north. If you're lucky enough to stay in the houses that sit across the path from the dunes, you can wake up to a sparkling ocean and sky that reflect off aged wooden window sills so brightly they seem to radiate their own warmth. Sakura cray-pas on 12x18" Borden and Riley #410 textured paper. (C) 2009 David Liao.
I will add pictures and information in the "Updates" for this project, so you can get to know each of the candidates better.
Coupons
Thanks to everyone who backed any of my previous kickstarter projects. If you are listed as a backer on any of my previous kickstarter projects, funded or otherwise, you will get a 10% refund coupon for any prints you order through this project!
I have also left coupons at other locations in Central Jersey. Please see http://art.davidliao.com/CouponsAds for locations and terms. If the project succeeds, I will leave a form field on kickstarter.com for backers to indicate whether they have coupons for refunds.
You can keep reading if you'd like to see the contract-looking version of the project.
THE AGREEMENT
If this Kickstarter page secures its pledge goal before time expires, then the Winning Artwork belongs to the Public Domain, and the "Backer Rewards" will be distributed.
This means I promise the following after the scheduled project expiration if the project succeeds
+ Post the Winning Artwork in full resolution on my website art.davidliao.com and post an update here on Kickstarter to indicate the URL within 5 business days
+ If total funding is at least $300, post the original painting of the Winning Artwork on eBay with a total initial bid and shipping cost of $25.00 within 5 business days
+ Wait up to 5 business days for each backer to provide one mailing address in the 48 contiguous United States for physical rewards
+ and then for each of those addresses, submit physical "Backer Rewards" to the United States Postal Service, commercial courier, or the backer address in person within 10 business days of the scheduled project expiration.
The terms (edition limiting included) of any backer rewards without any sales expire.
WINNING ARTWORK
The painting that sells the most prints wins. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined according to the aggregate pledges at the last moment when precisely one image had more backers than either alternative.
The full image I can release would be a PNG with at least 300PPI resolution at life size.
REFUNDS
No refunds issued beyond 30 days after scheduled project expiration. By backing this project, you agree that in no case shall any refund to you exceed the amount of money actually drawn from you through Amazon Web Payments into my account.
JURISDICTION
This agreement shall be interpreted under the laws of the State of New Jersey, except to the minimum extent necessitated by the fact that this Content is hosted on Kickstarter.com with its own agreements interpreted under the laws of the State of New York.

My time as a young researcher in physics inspires many of my pieces. I create impressions of nature, illustrate scientific concepts, and paint buildings of scholarship. My art reveals learning processes: nature paints perceptions, we frame its art in conceptual boxes, and we gather ourselves in the boxes of the academy.
My published scientific illustrations include a figure in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. I was commissioned for a watercolor Princeton University printed on Christmas cards sent to 2500 graduate alumni. The English Wikipedia’s front page has featured my watercolor of Cleveland Tower as “Picture of the Day."
Born in Red Bank, NJ and raised in California, I paint scenery from both States and from frequent travel. I received a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA and an M.A. in Physics from Princeton University.
