About this project

On 2009 October 17, I posted a replacement project at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/davidliao/christmas-watercolor-for-sale
for the same watercolor but with tweaked funding goal and rewards. For historical reference, the spiel for this project was as follows.
Mrs. Russel and Graduate Alumni Relations at Princeton University commissioned me to paint this watercolor for Dean Russel's Christmas card in 2007. Dean and Mrs. Russel sent cards to 2500 graduate alumni. That's their cat, Gulliver. He's playing with a snow sculpture in the front yard of Wyman House, their residence. The snow kitten was removed from the final Christmas card.
If backers meet the pledge goal for this project, I will release this painting to the public domain. That way, anyone may include the art in mugs, postcards, and art prints without asking for permission or jumping through licensing hoops. You don't even have to give attribution to me, but I would appreciate it :).

Following is a more detailed version of my promise. I'm happy to read your emailed questions and comments!
THE AGREEMENT
If this Kickstarter page secures its pledge goal before time expires, then the Proposed Artwork belongs to the Public Domain, and the "Backer Rewards" will be distributed.
This means that I promise to do the following after the scheduled project expiration if the project is successful
+ Post the proposed artwork in full resolution on my website art.davidliao.com and post an update here on Kickstarter to indicate the URL within 5 business days
+ Wait up to 5 business days for each backer to provide one mailing address in the 48 contiguous United States for physical rewards
+ and then for each of those addresses, submit physical "Backer Rewards" to the United States Postal Service, commercial courier, or the backer address in person within 10 business days of the scheduled project expiration.
Proposed Artwork
A larger preview is available at my art website (http://art.davidliao.com/index.php...). The full image I can release is a 2660 by 3547 pixels (enough for 8.9x11.8" giclee at 300ppi) PNG.
Trademark disambiguation
I am a graduate student at Princeton University, but I am not placing this project on Kickstarter in any University capacity. The University signed an agreement stating my ownership of the copyright in this image, but this project is not endorsed by the University.
Refunds
No refunds issued beyond 30 days after scheduled project expiration. By backing this project, you agree that in no case shall any refund to you exceed the amount of money actually drawn from you through Amazon Web Payments into my account.
Enforcement and jurisdiction
This agreement shall be interpreted under the laws of the State of New Jersey, except to the minimum extent necessitated by the fact that this Content is hosted on Kickstarter.com with its own agreements interpreted under the laws of the State of New York.
Version This version of the description was posted 2009 September 01. This version is different from another project for a copyleft reverse bounty, which I canceled before any backers pledged money.

My time as a young researcher in physics inspires many of my pieces. I create impressions of nature, illustrate scientific concepts, and paint buildings of scholarship. My art reveals learning processes: nature paints perceptions, we frame its art in conceptual boxes, and we gather ourselves in the boxes of the academy.

My published scientific illustrations include a figure in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. I was commissioned for a watercolor Princeton University printed on Christmas cards sent to 2500 graduate alumni. The English Wikipedia’s front page has featured my watercolor of Cleveland Tower as “Picture of the Day."

Born in Red Bank, NJ and raised in California, I paint scenery from both States and from frequent travel. I received a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA and an M.A. in Physics from Princeton University.
