About this project

DAVID GUILBAULT - Recording a Songwriter’s Body of Work

I have been writing songs since I can remember.  They are stories of life, loss and love.  But, only a few of them have been recorded.

It is now time to memorialize my “Body of Work” before I pass from this life.

Truth needs to be told.  Through the art and craft of songwriting, and driven by an insatiable, adventurous curiosity, I've gathered insights and experiences that have found their way into my music and lyrics.

To help these heartfelt, honest songs find their way out into the world, I am looking to produce recordings of my complete catalog of songs

To that end, I would greatly appreciate your financial help.

(LISTEN TO SOME OF MY RAW DEMOS ON REVERBNATION.)

Below this video is what I intend to accomplish, from modest to ambitious:

“Body of Work” - Digital Archive  ($1,000)

I have written almost 100 songs.  I will record all of them at home on a digital multi-track recorder, with tracks of just my voice and accompanying guitar.  These will all be archived online as a complete historical inventory of my songwriting.  You can hear early demos of some of them on ReverbNation.

“True as Blue” - Solo Acoustic Demos  ($1,000)

I have already recorded a dozen tracks, in one take, of me singing and playing guitar for an online demo album called, “True as Blue.”  These solo acoustic performances are available for purchase at CDBaby and iTunes.

"Ten in Twos” - Songwriting Demos  ($3,000)

I have never heard my songs performed by any musical ensemble larger than a pair of guitars.  So, I have invited five multi-instrumentalists to produce/engineer/perform two of my songs each for inclusion on a demo CD, called Ten in Twos", to showcase how my songs might be interpreted with full musical production.  I expect to have 1,000 copies replicated for sale at my live shows.  And, I can use these discs as demos to pitch my songs to established recording artists.

Example:

Produced Version of "Something to Lose"

“High” - Limited Edition Double Album   ($16,000)

This is the main component of my project, and the most costly. I expect to take the best 20 of my songs and  produce a studio album, with a professional producer, engineer and musicians.  The recordings will be presented as “High”, a vinyl/CD/download package.  I expect to press a limited edition of 1,000 multicolored, two-disc vinyl records in gatefold jackets, with a digital download card enclosed in the jacket.  In addition, I’ll have 1,000 retail-ready CD’s replicated for sale in record stores and at live performances.

“Black and White” - Book of Lyrics ($3,000)

I will have 100 80-page paperback books printed, called "Black and White - Lyrics of Love, Loss & Life", containing the lyrics to all my songs, published through Blurb. These will be available for sale at my live performances.

My greatest ambition in life has been to write and perform my own songs and have them heard and appreciated by a thoughtful audience.

I am now 62 years old, and concerned that I will depart this sweet world before I have had a chance to showcase my music as I would like it presented.

My fans have always told me my songs are “real” and “about something”.  Hearing that brings me joy and fulfillment.  I have always striven to make my lyrics heartfelt and truthful and my melodies simple and compelling.

I live in a community of artists, dancers, painters, photographers and musicians.  There are many accomplished neighbors and friends who will be able to lend their considerable talent to make these recordings special.  These artists are, as many are in this country right now, struggling to make a living with their creative work.  So, I intend to “share the wealth” and use the Kickstarter funds to hire many of them for this project

You would have my sincere appreciation and gratitude if you could help me finally commit these songs to recorded media and offer them to listeners near and far.

Thank you for your time and consideration.  I hope all is well with you and yours.

Cheers for now,

David Guilbault

FAQ

  • Oh gosh.  I didn't mean to worry my family and friends.  I simply meant that I'm getting old and grey and don't have a lot of remaining time to fulfill this musical dream.  But, no, I am not ill.  Just anxious to complete these recordings before advancing age makes this project problematic.  I hope and expect to live a long and prosperous life.  Sorry for the unintended scare.  Cheers for now.  David.

David Guilbault was an award-winning producer for network, cable and public television, public radio and the Internet with extensive experience managing all aspects of news coverage; writing and producing newscasts, feature reports, breaking-news stories, live events, talk shows, documentaries, personality profiles, political reports, special coverage and Webcasts.

Working his way up the ladder at ABC News in Washington and New York, he produced breaking news and special assignment stories for the network's evening news broadcasts, anchored by Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel, Sam Donaldson, Frank Reynolds, Charles Gibson and Howard K. Smith.

David was a pioneer in both cable and Internet news, working as a founding Senior Producer at the start-ups of both CNN and MSNBC.com.

He has also produced stories for PBS's "The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour" and NPR's "Day to Day."

Along the way, as he traveled around the world, and across the nation, David was honored with Emmy, DuPont-Columbia and Associated Press Headliner awards and a Benton Fellowship at the University of Chicago.

After his network news days, he became an independent filmmaker, working on documentaries about the homeless, the environment and HIV/AIDS.

But, his true love has always been songwriting. Over the years he has written nearly 100 songs, some of which have yet to be heard by an appreciative audience.

Now he wants to memorialize all those songs before his time in this world passes. Please help David fund this project so that his heartfelt and truthful songs of love, life and loss can find their way into the world.
