The best of my funny, angry, sad, weird stream-of-consciousness letters written to the supporters of my last Kickstarter project.
Thanks for visiting my project!
What is The Kickstarter Letters?
I funded the entire print run of my second novel, A Greater Monster, through a Kickstarter
project.* As a reward, I wrote each of my 128 contributors a stream-of-consciousness email or handwritten letter. This book is a signed & numbered handmade,
hardback collection of 52 of those letters.

What’s going on in
these letters?
I used either the contributor’s name or a suggestion he or
she made as inspiration, as a starting point for stream-of-consciousness**
writing. It’s essentially improv writing. In this collection, you’ll find
ridiculous dialogues, flash fiction, personal confessions, rants, cultural
commentary, and outlandish weirdness that I liberated from my brain. I tried
not to judge or censor.
But are there
pictures?
Why yes, as a matter of fact, Mike Wilgus, who designed the
cover and interior layout of A Greater
Monster, developed the cover art and interior illustrations to complement twenty
of the letters.

Handmade you say?
Indeed. The Kickstarter Letters is being published by Jason Pettus who is editor-in-chief and owner of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography. He specializes in personally making beautiful books for his authors. The pages of The Kickstarter Letters are hand-stitched together then wrapped with faux leather. The beautiful design alone makes it a great coffee table book or holiday gift. Not that you won’t want to read it, too. There are words inside.

Music?
I’ve included a playlist for both Spotify and Youtube of
songs that I listened to while writing The
Kickstarter Letters. They would make a resonant accompaniment to the
reading of said letters.
But is it worth
reading what you have to say?
Always with the tough questions. Take a look at reviews of
both of my novels on Amazon (A Greater
Monster and Death by Zamboni), and
you can download a PDF of the first 15 pages of A Greater Monster on my website: daviddavid.net/novels) And
here’s one letter, too.

Isn’t this whole
thing a little too meta?
I certainly hope so.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Risks are minimal; Jason has produced quite a few handmade books before. The illustrations are nearly complete. I do know that delivering the rewards of the stream-of-consciousness emails takes a great deal of time on my part, but I enjoy doing it. The highest level rewards of the short story, painting or improv show will likely take a few extra months to complete.

-
It is.
-
Most are one or two pages. A few of them are about 4 pages long, particularly the ones that fold out.
-
I used either my contributor's name as inspiration or a suggestion that they made, which you could think of as an improv suggestion. I then let myself go into a writer's trance and wrote in response to that inspiration.
