The time has finally come that we get to write this email. We can't believe it's true. But yes, it is. All the pens have shipped!
As tough as the past year has been, we wouldn't have done it any other way, or with any other people (that's YOU we're talking about). We grit our teeth while defining and hanging on to what means the most to us and our work. There is no better way to learn and grow.
Pen Type-A started off as a thing we wanted for ourselves. Normally it stays like that. It was a huge surprise when over 4,000 of you wanted a Pen Type-A too. So thank you. Seriously. Thank YOU! and thank you kickstarter for being such awesome game-changers.
Pen Type-A made in the USA
We are very proud to announce the launch of a new line of Pen Type-A that is made in the USA. Over the past few months we have been working closely with and learning about the capabilities of our new manufacturers in Vermont.
The new fabrication process requires some of the most hi-tech manufacturing equipment we've ever seen. It is inspiring to see machinists at work with these tools. Operating them is an art in itself. And the pride they take in every step of the process is inspiring.
The newest version of Pen Type-A has some pretty cool modifications and improvements. Changes include a locking gasket in the base of the sleeve so that the pen doesn't fall out when turned upside-down. The ruler now has a matte glass bead blasted finish. There is also a flexible rubber pocket at the base of the sleeve to hug the tip when the pen is not in use so it doesn't clog up.
Here's a pic of what it now looks like (more info here):
They are for sale here : http://shop.cwandt.com/products/pen-type-a
Pen Type-A comes with a lifetime guarantee. So if there is ever something wrong with it that is a result of some manufacturing defect, please let us know and we will repair or replace it. This pen is meant to last for a very long time and the idea of us cluttering your lives with extra junk you don't love makes our stomachs turn.
So please, get this only if you love it or know someone who will. It will last longer than you will (of course with replacement cartridges), so be prepared to pass it down for generations.
This is not an impulse buy. It's a serious one. Serious but with a smile.
what's happened with that old manufacturer ?
The Pen Type-A saga is not fully over for us. We still have a few pretty hefty loose ends to tie up. Including settling a dispute with our old manufacturer, who as many of you pointed out about a month ago launched a pen company to sell a design that bares an uncanny resemblance to ours. We don't take this matter lightly. And we want you to know that we are doing everything we can to set things straight. We will update you as things move forward.
A lot of you have been asking...
Last last weekend we were over at Maker Faire NYC showing some fun rideable objects that we've been working on. If you're curious and want to find out more please stay in touch.
We use Instagram lots and twitter not lots. But here are our handles:
Instagram : @teejers @cheewee2000
Twitter : @cwandt
this has probably been the most rewarding part of the experience for us. so thank you!
check out your drawings here : http://pentype-a.tumblr.com/
don't be shy, submit here : http://pentype-a.tumblr.com/submit
still no pen? ARG$^%&*&^%*&%$
If you have not received a pen, or if there is anything wrong with it please write to us and let us know. We want to make sure that everyone who supported this project is scribbling away.
International orders can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. The USPS tracking update makes it seem like it's in Chicago forever. However, it should magically pop-up in your mailbox. If you have any worries write to us!
Half of your drawings on postcards were sent out a couple weeks ago. We are making/sending more as we make them. These have evolved into a pretty fun project over the past year. We decided to write some small pieces of software to generate friends, animals + sandwiches and are using a lasersaur with a Pen Type-A mod as a glorified drawing machine.

Thank you. You were splendid company on this adventure, keeping us grounded and on our tippy toes.

Lots of you saw the pen featured on Fab.com today. It's a stainless steel pen in a ruler sleeve that bears an uncanny resemblance to Pen Type-A. Thanks for your emails and messages bringing this to our attention. This was a complete surprise to us when we saw it. Just to be clear, we are not affiliated with those pens in any way, except that we immediately recognized Allen from the images on their site. He is the US half of the two person duo we hired to manufacture the pens in China. (He hugged us when we last saw him!)
We’re looking into this and we’ll update you when we find out more.
Thanks for all your support. The adventure continues!
Remaining pens will be shipping out shortly (early next week). We did have a small delay with the screws we've been waiting for. The family run Vermont shop had a family emergency, but they're back on their feet and screws are shipping to us in the morning. (We've all had a tough week, but theirs was definitely the worst. Our thoughts are with them). Once we have all those screws, we'll assemble them and ship them out.
lots of love
time for sleep

We designed a 3D printed pocket friendly sleeve for your Pen Type-As!
You can get them order them directly from Shapeways for 12$
The pocketable sleeves are available in 3 materials:
Polished Alumide (grey)
Polished White Strong and Flexible
Black Strong and Flexible.
We like the black one the best! (it doesn't get dirty and makes the loudest pop sound)
The sleeve is lightweight and rounded making it easy to carry. It has a subtle flat side so that it won't roll off tables. There's a ledge at the bottom of the sleeve to make sure the fragile tip of the pen doesn't get crushed when you shove it all the way in. You can put the sleeve on backwards and write with it. And last but not least, it is designed to grip the pen so that it won't fall out.
We think these are pretty great features, but you are welcome to download the 3D file from shapeways and make your own modifications.
When you get your sleeves from shapeways be sure to dump any extra 3d printing powder from the inside of the tube. Sometimes they don't do the best job cleaning them out. If your pen gets stuck on its way in, keep dumping powder. Get all the powder out!
Thanks for reading all this. We hope you find the sleeve useful!
Again here is the link to get one : http://bit.ly/pocketsleeve
Thanks for your patience and support with everything!

Hope you are well and staying cool!
Our final batch of 474 pens is scheduled to ship from China to us on August 7th.
We currently have approximately 1000 pens at our studio that are waiting for new dime screws. We ended up rejecting around 1000 dime screws that were not according to our specifications. Sigh, we know. We are having this part remade in Vermont. These replacement dime screws are scheduled to ship to us by Aug 12. Yes, this means a lot of the remaining pens will be Vermont/China hybrids.
If all goes according to plan, we will ship out another ~1474 pens by the end of next week (Aug 17).
The remaining pens (should be around 500)...(don't worry we didn't forget about the rest of you!!!) are scheduled to ship from China at 2 week intervals after the August 7th shipment. They will ship a maximum of 480 pens at a time. These final pens are ones that are being replaced because they were rejected by us during quality control.
We will update you with more news as it comes.
Thank you for your incredible patience. Soon! you will all have your pens. Hang in there. You are awesome. This is the final sprint!
