A hybrid art gallery, digital magazine, bar & event space will provide budgets to many, many talented artists in NYC's Lower East Side.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Since Culturefix opened in 2010, we have set out to be one of the most accessible small art spaces in New York City for artists and audiences alike. In 2013, Culturefix has teamed up with the Superchief Gallery (formerly based out of Williamsburg, Brooklyn) inviting the Gallery/Digital Magazine/Artist Collective to host a yearlong curatorial residency at Culturefix’s alternative art space in the Lower East Side.

Together, our Kickstarter goal is to raise funds to endow over one hundred performing and visual artists with solid budgets that will facilitate exhibitions, events and performances throughout the year.

For each of the 52 weeks of 2013 will there will be a wholly new exhibition at the Superchief Gallery at Culturefix. That artist or group of artists will work closely with Superchief to curate nightly events for their week, such as Art Talks, Screenings, Readings, Dinners, Live Musical Performances and Performance Art.

That is correct, together we will be doing 52 gallery exhibitions in 2013. Not to mention the nightly events that will happen at the space as well. It is going to be a crazy year and we need your help to make that a reality.

Culturefix is a unique space for many reasons, one of which is the fact that all events here are free to the public. In order to continue that tradition, we are hoping to raise the money to provide budgets to artists and honorariums to performers through the community and this Kickstarter.

Please take a look at the artists we are doing our best to support and share with the public, we find them incredibly interesting and talented and we hope that you agree.

We understand that you yourself may not be able to financially support a Kickstarter, many people find themselves in a position where they appreciate the art of their friends and wish they could help, but don't have the cash, and to them we say, PLEASE HELP US GET THE WORD OUT by sharing our Kickstarter on your Facebook. I know you have 800+ friends on that thing and you never know what they might be capable of. If we all spread the word, we’ll make this a reality.

(Feel free to even go as far as emailing it to that rich grandmother of yours that wants to support culture, or to that friend of yours that only visits NYC once a year and wants to do something cool and fun, because we’re doing this for them too.)

A Budget for Exhibitions and Payment for Performing Artists:

The weekly exhibits will be produced with a budget that will average $400-$500, depending on the artists’ needs. This will cover typical costs such as printing, framing, didactics, promotional materials and whatever else that the artist may need to purchase to make their show a success.

Payment for live performances will average $200 per show. As many know, all Culturefix performances are free to the public. The space has hosted a wide range of talented presenters including: writers, filmmakers, performance artists and music producers; all of whom have presented their work completely for free. While this goodwill is greatly appreciated, we realize the importance of compensation’s impact on being able to eat and pay your rent, therefore, we will earmark a budget that will act as honorariums for artists.

We hope our campaign succeeds! If it does, we’re in for a wild ride.

The first challenge/risk that we face is the task of running one-week shows for an entire year. This is no small feat. Every Monday, the gallery will de-install the exhibit from the previous week and prepare the room (this includes removing hardware, painting, spackling, setting out materials, and receive works for the upcoming show). The new exhibit will then be installed later that day and late into the night.

We plan on tackling these issues with ample manpower and careful planning. Gallery managers and in-house handlers will be on staff every week to manage the inflow and outflow of the displays. In addition to turning over the space on Mondays, our time will be spent planning the production and promotion for every show. The most challenging aspect of this operation will be adhering to a small budget that will go towards compensating these handlers and handymen.

We look forward to these challenges, and are confident that with the funding we are raising here, we can succeed and help a generation of artists prosper. Most importantly, we are extremely excited about the innovation that will come with this partnership, with our space hopefully serving as an example of what can be accomplished with the creative community that has been growing in NYC and Brooklyn and deserves a multi-faceted home in the LES.
