Our KickStarter campaign for Acolyte ends tonight and at this point it's exceedingly unlikely that we'll make our goal. After the campaign concludes we won’t be able to post another update, so I thought it'd be good to send out something of a postmortem before the official deadline (hence: a pre-postmortem).
We knew from the beginning that we'd need two groups to make this work: 1) our friends & family to start, and 2) a wider audience of game-playing iPhone owners to push us over the finish line. The former came through with flying colors; we really appreciate all of the support that we got from family and friends and friends of family and family of friends... many of whom jumped in to help even without being iPhone owners or even game-players. We needed that strong start, and we got it.
Unfortunately, we never quite got traction with a wider audience. It was not for lack of trying: We got a wonderful write-up in AppAdvice, put the word out to as many interested groups as we could find, and even tried a little Internet advertising. We did get some folks either through KickStarter or by some other means who saw something in our idea and wanted to be a part of it, which was quite gratifying. But it never really snowballed into something bigger.
Part of the reason we chose KickStarter for Acolyte was to validate our ideas; it was essentially a market-place experiment. And as any good scientist will tell you, experimental failures teach you as much as successes (more, perhaps). So now it’s time for us to go back to the drawing board and figure out how we can best incorporate this lesson into Crooked Smiles’ future.
What we know already is that we’re not giving up. We really like the idea of creating games for smartphones that actually enhance social interaction and we don’t want that idea to die. Moreover, we’re having a lot of fun pursuing this goal. We’re not planning to go back to KickStarter again - at least not for a while - but we will welcome your continued support in the form of suggestions or ideas, emails or fully-funded, catered, week-long “brainstorming” retreats to luxury resorts.
For those of you who took a leap of faith with us by backing Acolyte, we appreciate your gesture more than we can express, and we’re going to find a small token of that appreciation to share with you. And for everyone who supported us financially, tactically, spiritually, or otherwise: thank you. There’s no doubt about it: YOU’RE AWESOME!
