About this project

Our Goal

I have something to say, but I'm part of a small team with humble beginnings. I initially wanted to reverse the fetishization and typecast of amputees in the film industry and explore the painful phenomenon of phantom pains, hopefully drawing more attention to the bizarre condition by documenting their incredible, marginalized stories. Yet, as I researched more about the symptoms and interviewed the amputees, I realized that I could go even further and question the essence and constitution of a phantom. Are amputees the only ones with phantom pains? What is the relationship between pain and the past? Does pain depend on memory? Why are pains invisible? The answers, if they exist, will be pended until the viewer decides, but I just want our mission to succeed: to remind people that every human being is amputated in some way or form, to remind people that they will not be alone in the end, even if the world says so.

We Need Your Help

The documentary feature, P, completed shooting last August and it is almost ready to enter the International Film Festival Circuit. I also began traveling to South Korea around that time to begin shooting KILL ME, a documentary on suicide culture among middle and high school students in Seoul. Eventually, I would like to expand this documentation by juxtaposing it to the lives of young North Korean defectors who are struggling to study and survive in the same Seoul today.

Unlike KILL ME, which will keep pressing for travel and compensation funds, P is currently near the end of its post-production phase. Materials that will be necessary for P's exhibition and competition in the film-fest arena are also near completion, but there is still one thing that is holding us from wrapping the project: the final scene. Please help us finish this last scene and screen this work around the world, for as you must already know, completing a movie does not mark its end.

Why $4,000
1. To complete P's final scene in post-production (color correction, external hard drives, upgrade equipment for video and audio editing)
2. To print materials for film festivals (e.g. posters, flyers, postcards, stickers, screeners)
3. To continue shooting KILL ME over the summer.

4. Kickstarter Fees and Amazon.com's processing fees

FAQs
1. What "type" of movie is it? Documentary horror? Sci-fi?
In LA, we are asked this quite frequently, but we hope you understand that we just like to kill myths and push the grammar of film/video. If "horror" is bordered by the unseen, unidentifiable forces of our world, then P demythologizes the slasher/gore diet that contemporary Hollywood creates, and rather, explores the often horrifying relationships between amputees and their phantom pains while blurring the dichotomies between physician and patient, director and actor, fiction and reality, visible and invisible. So what type of movie is it? Well, we sincerely ask that you will just watch and enjoy. As for KILL ME, all I can say is that it is a very personal project that I'd like to explore upon and continue long-term. Eventually, when it is ready I will present it as a social/historical documentary, but until then, I've got much more research and interviewing to do.

2. How and when will I get my reward(s)?
We have a special "Kickstarter unit" that is ready to communicate, administer, and deliver the exact rewards to each respective backer. Once our project is successfully funded, we will be able to request info (like a mailing address) from our backers through Kickstarter. Then, as soon as our movie gets invited to its first film festival this year, all of our backers will be the first to be notified about the news and they will receive their rewards within 5-7 business days.

3. With the number of film festivals continuously increasing today, which ones will you apply to?
Since we are prioritizing press coverage and help for the next project, we want P to primarily circulate among the major international film festivals but a few important regional ones are on our list as well. Here is a glimpse:

[N. & S. AMERICA]: New Directors, Mill Valley, Hampton, Nantucket, Telluride, Tribeca, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Slamdance, Seattle, Ann Arbor, Cleveland, Cinequest, Santa Barbara, Anaheim.

[ASIA & EUROPE]: Pusan, Cinema Digital Seoul, Tokyo, Bucheon, Jeonju, Berlin.

4. Can I increase my pledge once it's been made?
Yes! Once you pledge to our project, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. After you go to our project page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.

5. What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Nothing, unfortunately. If our goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money is charged and our movie does not get the chance to enter the international film festival circuit this year--an outcome we'd like to avoid by all means.

6. Can we exceed the goal?
Yes please! Kickstarter allows as much money as is given before the deadline. That could lead to a wider theater release or even an upgraded version of the creative marketing material.

7. I'm not in the US. Can I still pledge?
Yes! You can pledge from anywhere.
